Swedes expand hunt

BERGA Sweden - The Swedish navy
expanded its hunt yesterday and drop-
ped eight more depth charges near a
suspected Soviet submarine that of-
ficials fear may try to break out from a
week-long trap in a narrow Baltic inlet.
The expansion of the search raised
speculation that another foreign sub-
marine may be hiding outside the
Musko naval base, Sweden's largest
and most restricted naval facilty com-
prised of an underground network of
shipyards, workshops and radar rooms.
PATROL BOATS dropped the 220-
pound explosives after sonar detected
underwater movement near a narrow
point in Horsfjarden Bay, blockaded

with a combination of underwater steel
nets, wires and ships anchored'to the
inlet floor.
Vice Adm. Bror Steffenson, Sw'den's
chief of staff said there were "dif-
ficulties on the technical; tactical and
geographical levels" in the chase to
force up the intruder. He said the
Baltic's shifting waters and craggy
bottom makes it one of the world's most
difficult submarine hunting grounds.
Chief naval spokesman Capt. Sven
Carlsson said that shortly before 2:30
p.m. (9:30 a.m. EDT) "our forces
established sonar contact with an object!
moving close to the northern exit of the
area blocked by Swedish naval vessels.
