LEVY Last Saturday in Evanston, the Women's Field Hockey team dropped it's first game of the season, 3-0, to Nor- thwestern. The Wildcats, coached by Nancy Stevens, (coach of the under-21 national team), are presently ranked eighth in the country, and dominated Saturday's action. "We were unprepared for the game, we haven't faced any competition like that this year," said Michigan junior co-captain Heidi Ditchendorf, who is possibly out for the season with an in- jury to her right knee, suffered in the St. Louis game. "IT IS TOUGH in practice to simulate how a real good team like Nor- thwestern will play. People got frustrated, and the frustration led to worse play," said Ditchendorf. For the game, the Michigan offense took only seven shots on goal, while Northwestern sent 17 rockets in the direction of Michigan goalie, sophomore Jonnie Terry. "Jonnie played very well, she made some in- credible saves," praised Ditchendorf. Ditchendorf believes that the North- western game will prove helpful down the line. "It's good to have this loss at the beginning of the year, because it will prepare us for Iowa and Old Dominion, who are both ranked higher than Northwestern," Indeed, Iowa and Old Dominion are currently ranked second and third in the national rankings. THIS afternoon the stickers face Cen- tral Michigan, in what has developed into a competitive rivalry. Last season by 'Cats the teams faced each other three times, with Michigan winning twice. "We're definitely a better tean this year, we're a lot more skilled. But, it's usually a pretty physical game," predicted Ditchendorf. The game starts at 4:00 p.m. Michigan is currently 5-1, 2-1 in the Big Ten. 4 Michigan golfer Karyn Colbert con- tinued her fine individual play, cap- turing fourth place in the Michigan State Invitational last weekend, but the team could only muster an eighth-place finish in the 13-team tournament. Colbert finished the three-round tourney with a 226 total which was only five strokes off the winner, Syd Wells of MSU. Penn State won the individual with a score of 909. Although the Wolverines finished in the bottom half once again, coach Sue LeClair was happy with the results. "Our scores keep going down," she said. "We broke the 330 make twice this weekend; unfortunately, the other teams are improving also." The Wolverines travel to Ferris State this weekend for a three-team match with Michigan State and the host school. H -JESSE BARKIN Terry ...36 saves for stickers * CAMERA FANS * FREE! FREE! Michigan beat the Hurons 5-0 that day, but lost this past Saturday to eighth-ranked Northwestern 3-0. The team's record now stands at 5-1. Harr iers top BGSU tourney By MIKE MCGRAW Another strong performance was turned in by the Michigan women's cross country team Saturday, as the harriers took first place in the nine- school Bowling Green Invitational. Top individual honors in the meet were shared by three Wolverine run- ners. Senior Melanie Weaver, Junior Lisa Larsen' and freshman Sue Schroeder all finished with a time of 17:39. Carol Lam, a junior from Honolulu, came in seventh and was closely followed by another freshman, Bonnie McDonald, in eighth. "OUR TOP three ran even better than I expected on what was a very slow course," said coach Francie Kraker Goodridge. "What was par- ticularly pleasing was the strong im- provement of our second group which will be a key in our Big Ten and NCAA effort." The harriers return to action in two weeks when they travel to Ypsilanti for the second time this season. The meet will be against Eastern Michigan and Western Ontario. Last week Michigan won the nine-team Eastern Michigan Invitational. The Big Ten champion- ships are Nov. 6 in Iowa City. !OU? Don't get left behind because there is "too much to read."
