The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, October 5, 1982-Page 11 SPORTS OF THE DAILY NFL players reconsider demand WASHINGTON (AP) - Negotiators for striking National Football League players are ready to discuss dropping. their demand for a minimum wage scale if the club owners agree to a system tied to a maximum wage and incentive and performance bonuses, union bargainers told the Associated. Press yesterday. The union's insistence on a minimum wage scale has been a major obstacle in negotiations and was a key factor in triggering the players strike two weeks ago. "I THINK WE could get the member- ship to swallow giving up the minimum wage," union president Gene Upshaw said. The union negotiators also said they are prepared to entertain a proposal for a "private mediation" but indicated they still were cool to federal mediation, which NFL Management Council negotiators want. The union's abrupt about face on the minimum wage scale and mediation was traced to a one-hour discussion Friday night between union chief Ed Garvey and Jack Donlan, the owners' chief negotiator. "SIGNALS were receivedbduring that conversation t~o lead us to believe the, owners would be agreeable to an annual cap on wages," Garvey said. Repeated phone calls to Donlan on Monday were unanswered. The management council's executive com- mittee, made up of six club owners, met in New York but council spokesman Jim Miller wold not say where. He also said no post-meeting statement was planned. Three days of negotiations aimed at ending the strike ended Saturday with no progress reported. No future talks have been scheduled. DONLAN HAS previously sought the intervention of a federal mediator to aid in reaching accord on a new collective tive bargaining agreement. Union of- ficials had discounted mediation saying negotiators are "too far apart" for mediation. Garvey, however, said Sunday that if the committee of club owners joined negotiations and still no progress was made, mediation would be the next step. Monday night Garvey said the union would consider "some form of private mediation to get the talks moving." Someone finally ended Jim Sadler's two-week reign as 'the King of Griddes. It seems that Sadler' just didn't have his usual clairvoyance this week as he stumbled to a record of . well, we'd better not tell. We will[ report that Bruce Goethe of South State Street won the Pizza Bob's specialty with a record of 16-4. The match did go to a tie-breaker in which Goethe obliterated all opposition. Totally fictional sources report that Sadler's downfall was due to the fact that he listened to a Spartan friend for advice on his picks.. And we all know that Spartans don't know football. Spartans pick anyone wearing green to come out on top. So they expect MSU to win a lot, which is real likely, and they pick teams like Eastern Michigan to win, which is even less likely. Drunken Spartans have even been known to bet on their lawn against lawnmowers just because grass is green.
