The Michigan Daily-Thursday, September 9, 1982--Page 11 8 CRISP's problem is its image By DAVID SPAK Wait until December, and then you'll hear the bitching. -e"I don't schedule until the second Thursday," one student will say, "and there's no way I'll be able to get the easy econ prof." "YOU THINK that's bad," his friend will respond, "ICRISP at 8 in the mor- ning on the last day, and they're to get me up at that hour just to have some computer screen print out 'Fat chance, buster' when they enter my schedule." CRISP, formerly known as Computer Registration Involving Student Par- ticipation, is the University's much- maligned registration system. To the student who has to wait in line for three hours while the computer decides it's had enough, CRISP is an enemy. But to the senior who whisks through in precisely two minutes and 31 seconds, and to the campus old-timers who remember the lines that stretched across campus under the old registration system, CRISP is the micro-circuits gift to mankind. THE ACTUAL registration process is only the end function of CRISP, accor- ding to Assistant Registrar Thomas Karunas. The "memo talk" for each term's registration begins even before the preceeding registration is over. The University currently employs an "on-line terminal based system," the first such system used by a major university. AS TERMINAL operators enter in each student's choice of classes, the main computer records the information and automatically fills spaces in the sections. That way, the computer can immediately close a class once all the spaces open to early registration are filled. The CRISP system is so highly respected around the country that it has served as a model for other schools' registration systems, said Douglas Wooley, associate registrar. The University of Iowa, Ball State University, and Purdue University all have instituted systems similar to the University of Michigan's CRISP. In ad- dition, several other schools, including Northwesterp University and the University of Minnesota, are in the process of implementing CRISP-like systems.
