Made- Ann Arbor NOW capte s tages rally walkathnO r By BETH ANN SCHROTT With the demise of the Equal Rights Amendment last June, the National Organization of Women (NOW) vowed to take revenge against opposing legislators at the polls this fall. As part of that effort, the Ann Arbor Chapter of NOW is holding a rally and walkathon today at 10 a.m. at Liberty Plaza to raise money for the cam- paigns of pro-equal rights candidates. THE GOAL is "to get rid of the legislators that didn't vote for us," said Bev Fish, Ann Arbor NOW president. Supporters of that goal participated in nearly 100 walkathons across the country Aug. 26, National Women's Equality Day. Speakers at the rally will include Margot Duley- Morrow, president of Michigan NOW and associate director of the University Honors Program; state Senate candidate Lana Pollack; and Hank Flandysz, candidate for the state House. NOW members said they hope to encourage women to become more involved in politics. "Since the ERA failed to become accepted by a majority, it is imnor- tant for women to become more politically sophisticated," said Marcia Pupkiewicz. "The women's vote is emerging." MONEY RAISED from the 11 a.m. walkathon will go to NOW's Political Action Committee, established to raise campaign funds for national, state, and local candidates. Chris Langabeer, chairperson of today's event, said she expects to raise at least $3,000. Local NOW President Fish said the Ann Arbor group wants to support candidates who are "good feminists." She said NOW also hopes to become less reliant on the Democratic party. The new effort will "focus on showing that we are unified and organized," Fish said. Despite the ERA's failure, she said, "it made some good points and it made people aware." Rep. Perry Bullard (D-Ann Arbor) was scheduled to appear at the rally, but is on vacation until mid- 1 October.
