The games would be shown alternately by CBS and ABC, and could start Oct. 3, according to Tom Han- sen, assistant executive director of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the director of its college football television programming. In the interview with The Daily Oklahoman, Han- sen said the plan has been approved by the NCAA television committee and awaits final approval by the NCAA Council and the three networks that currently have a contract with the NCAA: ABC, C$S and the Turner Broadcast System. The plan does not provide for moving television ex- posures from Saturday to Sunday-except in one possible case on Oct. 9, the date of the Oklahoma- Texas game-but would provide for an additional television exposure beyond those called for in the NCAA contracts with ABC and CBS, Hansen said. San Francisco 11, Cincinnati 7 CINCINNATI (AP) - Bill Laskey, Reggie Smith and Bob Brenly drove in two runs apiece yesterday as San Francisco pounded the Cincinnati Reds 11-7 to move to within four games of first-place Los Angeles in the national League West. The third-place Giants gained a half-game on the idle Dodgers, and trail second-place Atlanta by one game. The Giants open a three-game series in Los Angeles tonight. Atlee Hammaker, 11-8, relieved Laskey in the four- th, pitching three-hit ball for two innings to earn the victory. Leading 1-0, San Francisco scored three times in the fourth to chase Frank Pastore, 8-12. A college athlete travels all over the United States competing for his school. The cross country runner, though, not only travels about, but gets to inspect the scenery during his 6.2 mile jaunt through the forests and valleys surrounding college campuses. This year, in particular, should be exciting for the Michigan cross country team as it takes no less than five trips to the nineteenth state, Indiana. After the season, the Wolverine harriers could gain extra class credit by reporting on the flora and fauna of Hoosierland. THE TEAM will participate in dual meets at Notre Dame, Purdue, and In- diana during the season and then have the opportunity to advance to the NCAA Districts in West Lafayette and the National Championships in Bloomington. If the Wolverines ran all these Indiana races back-to-back, the team would run the distance from Peru to Kokomo. But the road trips are not the only thing that excites coach Ron Warhurst, who is beginning his ninth year at the helm. He has an experienced team that looks like a top challenger to defending Big Ten champion, Wisconsin. "We have the potential to challenge for, if not win the year," said Warhurt. "Bi will be tough to beat. They in the nation last year and a everybody." Track star Brian Dieme lead the harriers after shirted last year. Laskey then lashed a two-run single to cen- ter for a 4-0 lead. Prusa out Junior tackle Ron Prusa, expected to be a key member of the Michigan offensive line this season, suffered a knee injury in practice Wednesday and will be examined by team physician Gerald O'Connor today. The extent of the injury is not known, but Prusa will not dress for this Saturday's game against UCLA. Prusa (6-3, 248) was listed as the starting quick tackle during spring ball but lost the job to senior Tom Garrity this fall. Head coach Bo Schembechler had said earlier this week that "changes would be made" - quite possibly in the offensive line. It is not known what effect Prusa's injury will have on the starting lineup for the UCLA game. - Bob Wojnowski n hoping the Big Ten definitely "We'll need to, to have a chance at Big Ten this winning." ut Wisconsin A big addition to the team this year is were fourth freshman Chris Brewster, who ran a are returning 4:05 mile and an 8:47 two-mile in high school, and came in 13th at the world pr returns to junior cross country championships. being red- "Chris is from London, Ontario and I rand Rapids think he could have beaten anyone at the Big Ten the high school level in the U.S," said amore. THIS SUNDAY the Wolverines open their season, which includes a home dual meet with Michigan State on Oct. 15, at the Springbank Road Race in Brewster's home town of London. "The Springbank is a 4.3 mile road race with most of the competition being Canadian running clubs," explained Wprhurst. "We've won the team championship five out of eight years. Road racing is very popular in Canada." But the first major test will be next week at the Notre Dame invitational, where Michigan will see a lot of its competition in the conference and from the midwest. "We're definitely under- dogs in the Big Ten coming into this '81 season," said Warhurst. "But that's a position I enjoy being in."
