Hancock, who developed his plan with Larry Crockett, a research staff member, said he would like the Univer- sity to commit $200,000 as a base budget for the MRC. That $200,000 would buy a part of the corporation, and private in- dustry and individuals would purchase the remainder. The University's initial investment would represent its share of ownership in the company, which would mean the University would have minority representation on the MRC board of directors. r That would leave it up to private sources to control the activities of the corporation. ASKED BY, a faculty member in May replied: "If you want control, you must supply the equity . . . You can't have control without putting the money into it." Although some observers see a lack of control as a problem, others would prefer that the MRC be set up as distin- ct from the University as possible. They argue that such an arrangement will allow faculty members to pursue their entreprenurial interests as individuals, without the red tape of the University. Thus far, the MRC has remained but a gleam in certain professors' eyes. Several schools and colleges are scheduled to debate the merits of the MRC proposal in the early fall. REACTION to the MRC at the June faculty Senate Assembly meeting was mixed, and the assembly decided to table the matter until the fall. Senate Assembly Chairman Ronald Bishop, a professor of internal medicine, said that he believed the ad- ministration would turn the MRC plan down if the faculty opposed it. "The administration does not want to take any money out of the pot and put it into the MRC unless there is strong support from the faculty," Bishop said in July. Thus far, both University President Harold Shapiro and Vice President for Research Charles Overberger have declined to comment on the MRC, saying they are awaiting the recom- how the University would protect its beliefs if it were outvoted, Hancock mendations of the various faculty bodies. The final decision on University sup- port for the MRC rests with the Regen- ts, upon the recommendation of the administration.
