SPORTS Tuesday, September 21, 1982 The Michigan Daily Page 9 Schembechler ba ledby By BARB BARKER f Everyone has one of those nights they'd t just as soon forget-including Bo c Schembechler. However, an under-the-w circumstances-amiable Michigan head p coach was able to reflect calmly upon p his team's 23-17 loss to Notre Dame at T his weekly press luncheon yesterday.- "They did to us this year what we did t to them last year," said Schembechler, adding that he was displeased with his l team's inability to stop the Irish p rushing attack - especially the running c of Notre Dame fullback Larry Moriar- i ty, who gained 116 yards. "They've never been a fullback team. They usually get a 25-yard game (out of the fullback)." THE WOLVERINE defense allowed 278 net rushing yards, while the Blue offense generated only 41 yards. tDespite Notre Dame's obvious domination, Schembechler said he believed Michigan would win the game Photo by BRIAN MASCK in its final fourth-quarter drive. the Irish 30-yard "I thought we had it," he said. "That sure would have been irony. if we had won that game, because we had no business even being there. Af we had won, I would have told the team ,after- ward that we deserved to win about as 433 39.4 49 much as they did two years ago (when 642 40.1 59 Notre Dame won, 29-27, on a last- Goals second field goal)." Schembechler sighted the noisy con- 29 30-39 40-49 50- Total ditions in Notre Dame Stadium as a 0-1 1-1 1-2 negative influence upon Michigan's 0-1 1-1 1-2 performance. 3-3 1-1 4-4 "WHAT BAFFLED me Saturday SQuarters night was all the screw-ups, and then I 2 3 4 t/Avg BILLBOARD 6 7 17 37/18.5 10, 10 0 32/16.5 The University of Michigan Bicycle Club is having its first meeting this ensive evening at 8:00 p.m. at 1084 East Engineering. We asked the ref to quiet the crowd, and he wouldn't do it. Then we were called on that delay-of-game penalty and they couldn't even hear the plays. That penalty really killed us. They couldn't hear a thing. You know on that final timeout - we had yelled ight end, not time out." Michigan, at the Notre Dame 31-yard ine, with time running out, was penalized five yards on a delay-of-game call forcing the second-and-eleven pass nterception which quelled the. Wolverine's last-chance drive. Looking ahead, Schembechler had nothing but praise for this week's op- ponent, UCLA. Michigan beat the Bruins, 33-14, in last year's Bluebonnet Bowl. "We're really going to have to push for this game," he said. "(UCLA) is a much stronger team then we encoun- tered at the Bluebonnet Bowl. They could be in the top five (teams in the country) - at least in the top 10. The Wolverines came out of the game relatively healthy, with only a bother- some groin pull incurred by Anthony Carter just before halftime. Carter's status for the UCLA game is being evaluated on a day-to-day basis. Daily P Notre Dame safety Dave duerson seals Michigan's defeat by wrestling the ball from Vince Bean att line. Duerson's theft came with 2:08 remaining and thwarted the final Wolverine drive. Michigan Grid Statistics Team Carter ............... 2 ARMSTRONG...:....4 ARRETT............ 2 S.
