Helms
o ptimistic
on school
prayer Win
WASHINGTON (AP) - After suf-
fering a bruising defeat on anti-abor-
tion legislation, Senate conservatives
sought to rebound yesterday with a
measure putting organized prayer back
in public schools.
"We believe we have enough votes to
pass a school prayer amendment," said
conservative Jesse Helms (R-N.C.).
HELMS' LIBERAL foes vowed to
fight him to the end as Senate
neared the close of a three-week social
issues debate.
"There will be no retreat on this
matter," said Sen. Lowell Weicker (R-
Conn.).
Majority Leader Howard Baker had
hoped to resolve the prayer fight by late
yesterday. But both sources said positions
on both sides hardened, and so a liberal
filibuster was likely to continue until at
least Monday.
After losing on the abortion
questions, the sources said, Helms was
insisting on a straight up-or-down vote
on the prayer amendment, and liberals
would agree only to action on a move to
table, or set aside, the measure.

The joy of CRISP
Students were still lining up in droves to get another good look at CRISP in Lorch Hall earlier this week. The star at-
traction featuring Drop/Adds is still pulling in the crowds.

Student demand for math

week as secretaries devoted their time
solely to handing out overrides.
"Last week the line backed up down
the hall and into the TA office," said
Terry Locke, secretary in the math
department. "Some of the people were
waiting in line for an hour and a half."
Some students grew angry at the long
lines. "I'm kind of upset about the way
they're doing it (handing out
overrides). Not only the math depar-
tment, but other departments have
been giving me the runaround," said
LSA freshman John Piekarski.
Most students, however, have been
understanding, Gehring said.
"I think that most students are very
patient, and I'm glad they are because
this whole thing is a big mess," he said.
To accommodate more students, the
department is experimenting this term
by introducing a lecture section for
Calculus 115, an introductory course

master's degree from the school, ex-
plained that the rally, with no protest
signs or public address system, "was
pretty much put together over the last
couple days."
Most people in the school don't think
it will be closed now, Yakes said, ad-
'ding that "they feel it will be treated
well by the University."
Before the speeches, the Regents ap-
proved several Replacement Hospital
Project items, including a lease for the
main adult hospital.
The Regents also awarded about $30
million worth of contracts for construc-
tion of the hospital, and nearly $1.9
million in contracts for work on the new
Ambulatory Care Facility.

previously taught to classes of roughly
30 students.
Although every effort is being made
to help students get into math courses
this term, things may get worse next
term, Gehring said.
"I am not looking forward to the Win-
ter term at all, because I'm afraid it
will be worse than this one," he said.
