As a Navy officer, you grow, through new challenges, new tests of your skills, WASHINGTON (AP) - National Football League contract talks will resume Friday, threedays before the players are to set a strike deadline, and a spokesman for the owners said they are willing to meet through the weekend if the union negotiates seriously. Ed Garvey, executive director of the NFL Players Association, said the union asked for the reeting to respond "point by point" to the owners' latest offer including seniority bonuses of up to $60,000 per player this year. The NFLPA rejected that plan just four hours after it was presented last Wed- nesday, the last time the two sides met. NOW, HOWEVER, Garvey said, "We want to discuss any ideas that will ad- dress the concerns of the players.' In listing those concerns, he omitted the cornerstone of the player's deman- ds - that salaries be based on a fixed percentage of the team's gross revenue. The owners have said they will never grant that. Garvey said the players' negotiators want to talk about substantial wage in- creases, elimination of wage inequities, incentive bonuses for individual and team performances, guaranteed con- tracts and elimination of what he described as the incentive owners have to cut older, more expensive players. "WE ARE NOT abandoning percentage of gross but are trying to form a basis for continuing negotiations," Garvey said. "We are willing to listen to any ideas that will solve the concerns of the players." The meeting is to begin at 10 a.m. EDT in New York. "Depending on how serious they are, we are ready to go through the weekend," NFL Management Council spokesman Jim Miller said. THE PLAYERS' union, whose collec- tive bargaining agreement with the league expired July 15, has called for a meeting of its executive committee next Monday in New York to set a strike deadline. Garvey said earlier the deadline would be either the third or fourth weekend of the season - Sept. 26- 97? nrv Ort.+'2_ would cost the league $1,068 billion over the life of the contract, or 30.5 percent of the anticipated $3.5 billion gross revenue the league is expected to generate during the five-year period. The owners' chief negotiator, Jack Donlan, said the plan would cost $1.5 billion and amount to about 50 percen of gross revenue. Baltimore 5, New York 4 BALTIMORE (AP)- Benny Ayala's single capped a two-run eighth-inning rally that led the Baltimore Orioles to a 5-4 win over the New York Yankees in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader yesterday.
