Illinois trailed 16-13 when Swoope picked off a pass from MSU 'quarter- back John Leister and returned it 35 yards to the Spartan 39. From there, Illini quarterback Tony Eason hit Mike Wartin with a 36-yard pass to the 2. CURTIS slammed over from there to put Illinois ahead to stay and Mike Bass added a 23-yard insurance field goal in the final quarter - his third of the day. The Illinois defense preserved the win by stopping a final Spartan drive at the 17, breaking up a pass to Aaron Roberts in the end zone and sacking Leister on the next play. Leister gave MSU the lead at the start of the third quarter by engineeri- Ing a 65-yard, seven-play drive. Elway, who completed 29 of 37 passes, had a 30-yard scoring throw to flanker Mike Tolliver and a 5-yarder to Chris Dressel in the first half. He then connected with tailback Vincent White on a 25-yard play to give Stanford a 21-7 lead with 4:04 in the third period. White, a 5-foot-8, 190-pound senior, was Elway's favorite offensive weapon.
