"The strength of our recruiting is our three big fullbacks," said Michigan head coach Bo Schem- bechler. THE THREE FRESHMAN fullbacks are Dan Rice (6-2, 215), Bob Perryman (6-2, 215) and Eddie Garrett. Rice, who was selected to several All- American teams, runs the 40-yard dash in 4.55 secon- ds and gained over 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns during the last two seasons. Perryman rushed for 2,043 yards and 26 touchdowns last year. If the fullbacks are the strength of the recruiting class, the tailbacks can't be far behind. In Ben Logue (6-0, 205) and Thomas Wilcher (6-0, 185) the Wolverines tabbed a pair of tailbacks with some big numbers to their names. Logue, an All-American and Georgia Player of the Year, gained an astounding 2,776 yards and 23 touchdowns last year. Wilcher rambled for 1,254 yards on only 65 carries (19.3 average). As a junior he rushed for 965 yards on 45 at- tempts (21.4 average). Wilcher also is the national high school record holder in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.6. "Wilcher is one of the fastest sprinters around," saif offensive backfield coach Tirrel Burton. "Now he has to do that on the football field. We can't compare him to the (Rob) Lytles and Woolfolk's yet. But his speed is certainly an attribute that we love." THE POSITION that recruits are most likely to contribute at this year, besides fullback, according to Schembechler is wide receiver. In addition to talent, these receivers have some interesting names: Trian- do Markray (6-2,185), Gilvanni Johnson (6-2,180) and Ivan Hicks (6-2, 180). What they did in high school: Z Ben Logue - 2,776 yards rushing and 23 touch- downs as a senior. d Thomas Wicher - 1,254 yards rushing on 65 carries (19.3 average) as a senior. " Dan Rice-Over 2,000 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns in last two seasons. + Bob Perryman - 2,043 yards rushing and 26 touchdowns last year. Markray averaged 36.3 yards a reception on his 19 catches. A product of the state of Michigan, Markray played Class D ball. Johnson earned Michigan All-State honors. He pulled in 51 passes for 952 yards (18.6 average). Hicks, an All-American from New Jersey, played both quarterback and defensive back in high school. He is listed as a defensive back/wide receiver for the Wolverines. Other recurits who will line up at defensive back include Tony Gant (6-2, 175), Dieter Heren (6-3, 190), Steve Johnson (5-10, 180), Greg Randall (6-0, 175) and Derek Woodmore (6-1, 190). GANT WAS CONSIDERED to be one of the nation's top high school defensive backs. He received Ohio' s Governor Trophy, symbolic of the state's Player of the Year. Heren was an All-Indiana selection last fall at tight end, linebacker, and defensive back, but will play the latter position at Michigan. Johnson and Woodmore both lined up at running back in addition to defensive back in high school. . The Michigan kicking game will get a boost from this year's recruiting class in the person of placekicker Pat Moons. Moons was rated the nation's best prep kicker by Blue Chip Magazine. The Coral Springs, Fla. native booted 46 of 48 extra points and nine field goals last season. Another Wolverine freshman who hails from a warm weather area is quarterback Jim Harbaugh of Palo Alto, Calif. Harbaugh threw for 2,903 yards and 34 touchdowns during his final two prep campaigns. He completed 59 percent of his passes last year. Jim is the son of former Michigan defensive coordinator and new Western Michigan head coach, Jack Har- baugh. Other recruits with relatives from the Wolverine grid program include offensive lineman Mark Ham- merstein (brother on Wolverine defensive tackle Mike), linebacker Andy Moeller (son of Michigan defensive coordinator Gary), tight end Paul Sch- merge (younger brother of former Michigan tight end Mark) and defensive back/wide receiver Hicks (younger brother of former Wolverine standout Dwight). By RON POLLACK This year's battle cry for college football may well be "lights, camera, action." Television has seen to it that cameras often are on the sidelines and in the air in a blimp. Followers of college football will attest that there is always plenty of action. And now that night games are taking place with added frequency, "lights" have been added to the college football battle cry. NORTHWESTERN and Illinois get the Big Ten season underway on Sep- tember 4 at 6:00 p.m. Minnesota will play five of its six home games at night this year in the new Hubert H. Hum- phrey Metrodome. Turner Broad- casting will air 19 night games this season on cable TV during prime time. Although Michigan plays Minnesota at home this season, and is unlikely to have any of its games shifted to night- time for a cable broadcast, it will get a chance to compete under the lights when it travels to South Bend, Ind. to face Notre Dame on September 18. The Wolverine-Fighting Irish clash was originally scheduled as an after- noon game but had its starting time moved to 9:00 p.m. at the request of ABC-TV, which will televise the con- test. "MICHIGAN and Notre Dame aren't desperate for TV appearances, so we just did it to help ABC," said Notre Dame spokesman John Heisler. "They made a good presentation and we've had a good working arrangement with them, so why not help them? "We also went along with their request, because we couldn't find any reason not to, he continued. "We couldn't find any great objections to it." Michigan head coach Bo Schem- bechler sees one problem that will be caused by the night game, although it obviously isn't severe enough for him to nix the idea of a late start.
