The senior flanker from Riviera Beach, Fla. is often credited with helping to teach head coach Bo Schembechler the fundamental need to throw the football. His 45-yard touchdown reception as time ran out in the 1979 Indiana game is con- sidered by many to be the most ex- citing play in Michigan football history. Carter and Georgia's Herschel Walker are the only two players to have finished in the top ten in the Heisman Trophy balloting each of the past two years. He has been called many things, including the most exciting player ever to play college football, and we thought a complete look at this athlete's im- pressive career seemed appropriate as Carter enters his final season at Michigan. Anthony Carter (5-11, 161) Has scored one touchdown for every four catches he has made. . . his 16.7- yard career average currently places him ahead of the NCAA record pace set by Nebraska's Johnny Rodgers, who gained 13.8 yards every time he touched the ball ... has caught at least one pass in 20 consecutive games and 25 of his last 26 contests ... finished third in the nation on kickoff returns last year and second in the nation his sophomore year . scored on a 78-yard punt return against Northwestern in his first collegiate contest . . . in 1980 became the first sophomore ever selected the Michigan team MVP'. . . has the oppor- tunity to become just the second player in Michigan history to be named an All- American three consecutive years (Bennie Oosterbaan is the only other) . . he has the opportunity to become just the eighth player in Big Ten history to be named an All-American three straight years (Alex Agase was the last to do it, in 1946) . . . has gained 10 or more yards seven out of every 10 times he has touched the ball in his collegiate career. What they're saying about him "People around the league have compared me to Anthony Carter, and I'm honored by that since An- thony Carter is the greatest receiver I've ever seen. And that includes the Lynn Swanns." --Duane Gunn, Indiana receiver "I believe he's the most gifted athlete I've ever had." -Bo Schembechler "Having witnessed throughout the years, many great athletes, it is difficult to recall anyone with the ability to alter the course of a foot- ball game as quickly as Anthony Carter. " C -Gil Brandt, Dallas Cowboys chief scout "It's good to have him out there. A defense cannot afford to leave him out there with just one man. He puts the defense off balance." -Lawrence Ricks, Michigan running back "Anthony Carter is, without question, the most exciting player in, college football. He is simply spec- tacular. He has no peer in college football at his position and he has no peer as a big play specialist. He is the most dynamic and explosive per- former in college football." -Bo, again Career Receptions Year 1979 1980 1981 No. 17 51 50 Yds. 462 818 952 2,232 Avg. 27.2 16.0 19.0 TD 7 14 8 Total 118 18.9 29 Wisconsin 21, Michigan 14 Badger defensive back Matt Vanden Boom intercepts three Steve Smith passes and Wisconsin topples Michigan from its Number One perch.
