Despite the departure of Ohio State's Art Schlichter from the conference scene, there are a num- ber of outstanding signal-callers that Michigan will face in Big Ten play this season. And three of them are featured here in the persons of Illinois' Tony Eason, Purdue's Scott Campbell and Michigan State 's John Leister. Also featured is Indiana 's Duane Gunn and Iowa 's Reggie Roby, as we take a look at some of the "Stars of the Big Ten. " Tony Eason (Illinois), quarterback In one short year, Illinois quarter- back Tony Eason has gone from a relative unknown to one of the most celebrated signal callers -in college football today. After two seasons of junior college ball, Eason arrived in Champaign 12 months ago and proceeded to rewrite the Illini record books. He completed 61.1 percent of his 406 passes, racking up 3,360 yards and 20 touchdowns in the process. "TONY IS in the same class with all the othergreat quarterbacks I've been associated with," said Illinois head coach Mike White, who has groomed such standout quarterbacks as Craig Morton, Jim Plunkett, Mike Boryla, Steve Bartkowski, Vince Ferragamo, Joe Roth, Rich Campbell and Dave Wilson. "What makes him unique is that he's such an athlete. He's an All- American. He has a pro's arm and the kind of mobility they drool over." With All-American and Heisman Trophy considerations aimed at Eason, he has tried to keep from getting a big head. "The big thing is that you have to keep everything in perspective," said Eason. "When I get my face on a magazine cover, I'm representing the university."- Eason hopes to represent the univer- sity on more than magazine cover this season. He hopes that he and his team- mates can represent the university in a bowl game this year, something the team was ineligible for last season. "We've been setting our sights on a bowl game since Coach White came here (in 1980)," said Eason. "If we execute as we should, we have a bona fide shot at a bowl. Last year we had to accept the fact that we couldn't go to a bowl game. But we still worked hard to win." --RON POLLACK Scott Campbell (Purdue), quarterback "Uh one and two and three and kick .... uh one and two and three and kick." Hey, what's going on here? Who is this Scott Campbell, and what is he. 1000!0 doing in a jazz dancing class? Huh, Scott? "WELL, IT really helps the body coordination and it improves your flexibility," says the 6-foot, 194-pound, junior quarterback of the Boiler- makers, somewhat sheepishly. Oh, Coach Leon Burtnett asked that you and a few other players take this class for conditioning purposes, huh? "Well, he didn't really ask," says the man who hopes to direct a Purdue of- fense that does not have "one, two, three, kick" as its background music. IF CAMPBELL'S summer dancing class serves itsI purpose, Purdue op- ponents would be well advised to keep Campbell under wraps, lest he do a sof- tshoe on their little heads. Last year, Campbell threw for 2,680 yards and 18 touchdowns while com- pleting nearly 58 percent of his passes. And there is little doubt that a year's experience, not to mention the two-step practice, will help Campbell improve on those numbers even more. "Scott Campbell is a big-time quar- terback and we'll expect him to be even more effective this season," says Bur- tnett. THE FACT that Burtnett plans to use his quarterback's considerable passing abilities as much as possible this season pleases Campbell to no end. "I love to throw the football-it's a great way to move the ball," says the Hershey, Penn. native. Sure, and if that doesn't work you can always waltz it down the field, right Scott? -BOB WOJNOWSKI John Leister (Michigan State), quarterback No. Name :33 Jeff Akers 5 Earl Allen 57 Tim Anderson 34 Gre~g Armstrong 49 *Ar' Balourdos 25 *Vincentl Bean 19 Bob Bergeron :**Marjon Body 40) *MkeBoren 1:3 ***Keith Bostic 28~ **IDon Bracken 52 Kevin Brooks 74 Bruce Brown 15 **Jerry Burgei 12 Fritz Burgess 6:3 ***Wnfred Carraway 8:1 Milt Carthens 1 **AnhoyCarter 30 Brad Cochran" 10 *Jeff Cohen 21 "*EvanE:Cooper 5~6 Robert D~ana 26 Nate D~avis 42 Ricky Davis 9 D~an IDecker 90 Vince D~eFelice 64 **Jerry lDiorio 69g **Tom lDixon 88 **Craig D~unaway 17 Jlohn Ferens 72 Rick Frazer 32 Eddie Garrett 54 **Tomfl Garritv 58 John Ghindia 50 ***Paul Girgash 9 llarry (;osier 14 Tony Grant 62 .Joe (Gray 7 David flal 6 *'Ali llaji-Sheikh 78 Mark Hlammerstein 66 *Mike Hlamnmerstein 22 mickey Hlanlon 4 Jim flarbaugh 48 **Tom Hlassel 19 Dieter leren !N4 "Jim lHerrmann 2 **Rich Hfewlett 17 -Ivan Ificks 76 *Stefan Humphries 35 ***Jeraldj Ingram 734 *J)ug .James 26 (,ilvanni .Johnson 24 teve .Johnson * Numb er of letters won Pas.
