BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Two
Argentine coast guard gunboats ran the
British blockade of the Falklands
Islands and are patrolling the coastline
of the disputed South Atlantic ar-
chipelago, a coast guard spokesman
said Wednesday.
Capt. Victor Badini told the
Associated Press the two small vessels,
each carrying-a crew of 30, crossed the
373 miles from the mainlnd to the islan-
ds Tuesday. He declined to describe
their r9ute.
THE REPORT was the first confir-
mation of Argentine naval activity in
the zone since the British blockade took
effect before dawn Monday. The
British ae believed to have four sub-
marines in Falkland waters and have
threatened to attack any Argentine
vessels within 20 miles of the islands.
Meanwhile, President Reagan
dispatched Secretary of State Alexan-
der Haig back to Argentina yesterday to
seek a peaceful solution of the Falklan-
ds crisis, and bluntly warned Moscow to
"butt out" of the dispute between two
U.S. allies.
The president announced at an in-
formal news conference in the White
House Rose Garden that Haig, just
back from talks in London, will return
shortly to Buenos Aires to try to
forestall a clash between British and
Argentine armed forces.
AS THE potential for an armed con-
frontation heightened, reports per-
sisted that the Soviet Union is sharing
intelligence on the British fleet with
Argentina and that the United States is
providing spy plane data to the British
about the Argentines bivouacked on the
islands.
Reagan refused to talk about U.S. in-
telligence operations, but said of the
reported Soviet activity, "well, that has
been reported and evidently is
established ... I'd like to see them butt
out."
Haig called the Falklands dispute
"exceptionally difficult and excep-
tionally dangerous but said he had
received assurances from the leaders
of both countries yesterday they are
prepared to continue to work with him
toward a peaceful solution.
Haig said that as a result of his con-
versations in London, plus telephone
conversations yesterday, he has
developed "new ideas which I have
described to the Argentine government.
"Based on these new ideas, the
Argentinians have invited me to return
to Buenos Aires. I propose to do so
tomorrow (Thursday)."
HAIG AGAIN sought to portray the
United States as attempting to steer i
middle course in the conflict, apparen"
tly in response to speculation the ado
ministration is tilting toward Great
Britain. Though, publicly praising;
Haig's peacekeeping effort, British of-;
ficials have privately expressed an-
noyance that America is not more fit-
mly in their corner.
.,
Britain has imposed a 200-mile war
zone around the Falklands, and British
Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher
said, "If the zone is challenged we shall
take that as the clearest evidence thg
the search for a peaceful solution has
been abandoned. We shall take the
necessary action. Let no one doubt
that."
The response to Haig's next visit to
Argenting will be "crucial," said That-
cher, as opposition parties rallied
behind her insistence that Argentite
troops must withdraw from the islandis
seized April 2 and British ad-
ministration be restored before iy
talks on future sovereignty.
