SPORTS The Michigan Daily Tuesday, April 13, 1982 Page90 A _SPORTS OF THE DAILY Badgers end netters' win streak U By TAM BENTLEY A Michigan win streak of 34- consecutive Big Ten matches has been brought to an end by the Badgers of Wisconsin as they downed the Wolverine netters, 5-4, in Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Center Saturday. "We have not been doing the job in singles," said Michigan coach Brian Eisner. "When it got right to the point where we had to cash in to win the mat- ch, we were very tentative and it's very discouraging." PLAYING IN the number-one singles spot against Wisconsin was Mark Mees who went down in a three-set defeat to Steve Lovett, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Senior netter Michael Leach came through for Michigan, though, as he defeated Wisconsin's Andy Ringlien, 6- 4,7-6. . The tide turned 'back towards Wisconsin for the next three matches, however, as Paul Van Walleghem over- took Michigan's Bill Godfrey, 7-5, 4-6, 6- 4. Next, the Wolverines' Ross Laser suf- fered a loss at the hands of Dicky Browne, 6-4 4-6, 6-3, and senior Ihor Debryn also lost to Badger Dan Arends by the score of 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. MICHIGAN'S Rodd Schreiber pulled out another win for the Wolverines from the sixth singles spot by overturning John Wayne, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6. Tom Haney was absent from singles action against Wisconsin as a result of an ankle he injured in Michigan's mat- ch against Minnesota (played the previous night). It is questionable whether Haney will be ready to play singles for tomorrow's match -against Michigan State. He is presently only seeing doubles action.',. "THERE IS no question that we missed Tom Haney in our singles lineup and he was only playing about 50% in his doubles," said Eisner, "but we still should have beaten Wisconsin." In the doubles matches the number one team of Leach and Mees were dominant and defeated Wisconsin's Van Walleghem and Ringlien with a sweeping two-set score of 6-2, 6-2. In the'number-two spot Haney and Debryn did not fare as well as they went down to Lovett and Wayne, 6-2, 6-4. MICHIGAN'S number-three team of Godfrey and Schreiber held their own against the Badger twosome of Arends and Clint Watson and emerged vic- torious with a score of 6-3, 6-4. "All four singles matches that we lost were three setters and all were very close.," said Eisner. "Again, like the Minnesota match, we put ourselves down 4-2 after the singles and you can't expect all three doubles teams to bail you out every time." The last time Michigan lost a Big Ten match was on April 16, 1978 when it lost to Wisconsin in a battle that mirrored Saturday's with the Badgers coming BILLBOARD Yesterday's Michigan-Grand Valley softball game was cancelled due to poor field conditions. His Big Ten career mark now stands at 109-4. Women netters win To say that the Michigan women's tennis team beat Ohio State last Sunday would be an understatement, indeed. Regardless of whether matches, sets or games are counted it all adds up to the same thing-a Michigan rout. The Wolverines won all nine matches, 18 of 19 sets and outscored the Buckeyes 109-44 in games. The win upped Michigan's record to 6-2, 4-2 in the Big Ten. AT FIRST singles, Marian Kremer impioved her season's record to 8-0 with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ohio State's Kathleen Coleman. At the number'two position, Mary Mactaggart routed the Buckeyes' Christie Turdo, 6- 2, 6-0. Mactaggart's record now stands at 7-1. The Wolverines' third singles player, Jill Hertzman, came as close to perfec- tion as a player can, as she dropped but one game against Nan Koran,6-1, 6-0. At the fourth singles slot, Michigan's Jane Silfen also blanked her opponept in the second set, but-did not win the fir- st set as convincingly as did Hertzman. Silfen downed CathyBrown,6-4,6-0. , KAREN Milczarski lost more games than any other Michigan singles player, yet still won convincingly over Linda Saumby, 6-2,6-4. Juliet Naft completed the Michigan sweep in singles by beating Becky Webb, 6-2, 6-2. Kremer and Silfen teamed at first doubles to trounce Coleman and Turdo, 6-3, 6-2. Mactaggart and Robbie Risden kept the Wolverines on their winning ways by downing Koran and Saumby,'- 1, 7-5. And then there was the third doubles match which brought an end to Michigan's shutout. Not in matches, but in sets. The Wolverines' Betsy Shapiro and Lisa Noferi took the first set again- st Webb and Kelly Custenborder, before dropping the next set 1-6. But the Buckeyes' success was -short-lived as Shapiro and Noferi came back to win the final set, and the match, 6-3. Debryn not only lost in singles competition to the Badger's Dan Arends, but also teamed with Tom Haney to drop a doubles match to Wisconsin's Steve Lovett and John Wayne.. WATER BALLOON MAN IA!!!
