Page 10-Friday April 9, 1982-The Michigan Daily Tigers set to open season in K.C. By DOUGLAS B. LEVY Spring training is now over. The snows in Kansas City at least, has melted. The Tigers will finally play their twice-delayed season-opener tonight at 8:30 against the Royals. Sparky Anderson has completed his third spring exhibition season as manager of the Tigers and he says that this is his best Detroit team to date. In the past, he has promised that by 1982 the Tigers would be looking to win the American League East. WHETHER OR not Sparky can lead his team to a division crown remains to be seen, but either way, this year's team has a solid line-up. The infield for Detroit should be very consistent. Defensively, perhaps no American League East team is stronger up the middle. Last Season, second baseman Lou Whitaker and Golden Glove shortstop Alan.Trammel led the league in double plays. Rick Leach won the first base job because of his heavy hitting this spring but defen- sively he is the surest-handed first baseman that the Tigers have. Tom 'Brookens is secure at third bas, where he looks to have a fine season,'barring injuries. Offensively, Trammell (.258 last season) and Whitaker (.263) will bat in the eighth and ninth spots where they figure to be on base a lot for the top of the batting order., OVER THE winter, Enos Cabell was acquired from the San Francisco Gian- ts. Cabell, a ten-year veteran, has a .273 lifetime batting average. He can play first base, third base, and the uutfield and should be an asset to the team. Veteran Richie Hebner can also fill in at first and third. In right field the Tigers have acquired Chet Lemon from the Chicago White Sox. Last season Lemon batted .302 with nine home runs, and 50 runs batted in. He is generally recognized as a solid ballplayer offensively and defensively. Kirk Gibson (.328, 9, 40) is being billed as the game's next superstar. If the centerfielder stays at the pace he established at the end of last season, he just may very well be the next Mickey Mantle. ANOTHER Tiger trade has put another former San Francisco Giant in Detroit. Larry Herndon (.288, 5, 41) is the new Tiger left fielder. Herndon can add only positive qualities: experience, ability, and attitude. In reserve is speedster Ed Miller, recently acquired from Atlanta, and Lynn Jones, a defensive replacement. On both offense and defense, the Tigers have assembled a productive outfield unit. The Tigers are also strong where all serious contenders must have depth, at catcher. Lance Parrish (.244, 10, 46) is the starter, although Anderson has said that he would like to see Bill Fahey cat- ch 30 or 40 games. John Wockenfuss provides another skilled receiver. PITCHING IS the name of the game, and the Tiger staff includes some potential big winners. The stopper for Detroit is Jack Morris (14-7, 3.05 era). The second and third starters are Dan Petry (10-9, 3.00) and Milt Wilcox (12-9, 3.04). Dave Rozema, who was the most effective pitcher this spring, has won the fourth starting position. In his days as manager of the Cincin- nati Reds, Anderson was known as "Captain Hook." With the Tigers this season, Anderson is not blessed with a stopper out of the bullpen. Kevin Saucier (4-2, 1.65, 13 saves) is the most effective short reliever. Elias Sosa, recently acquired from the Montreal Expos, and Aurelio Lopez, recovering from an injury, are two other short relievers. The long relievers will be Pat Under- wood, Dave Tobik, and rookie Larry Pashnick. In the past, Anderson has said that if he gets 55 wins from Morris, Petry and Wilcox, the Tigers would win the division. Fifty-five wins is a tall order, but a possibility. Tiger Tales: Chet Lemon who rein- jured the pulled muscle in his rib-cage will miss opening day. His replacement will be Ed Miller.. . Kevin Saucier suf- fered a bruised pitching hand when struck by a Dave Stapleton line drive in the seventh inning of the Tiger 12-5 win over the Red Sox. Trammell ...
