The Michigan Daily -Thursday, April 8, 1982-Page 9 NHL Playo s .Rookie goalie sparks Bruins win BOSTON (AP)- The goaltending of Mike Moffat, playing ift only his third National Hockey League game, and goals by Peter McNab, Brad Park and Mike O'Connell lifted the Boston Bruins to a 3-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres last night in the opener of their playoff series. The 20-year-old Moffat turned aside 24 shots as Boston gained the upper hand in the best-of-five series that continues tonight. McNab and Park each scored his 32nd career playoff goal *before Yvon Lambert spoiled Moffat's shutout bid at 8:20 of the third period. Just 1:28 later, O'Connell fired a slap shot from about 40 feet on the right side that went through the legs of defen- seman Hannu Virta and past goalie Don Edwards. McNab connected on a power play with just 16 seconds left in the first period. He took a drop pass from Park, and his 20- foot shot from the right circle beat Edwards to the goalie's left. At 18:44 of the second period, Park gave Boston a 2-0 lead. Barry Pederson won a faceoff at the left circle and got the puck back to Rick Middleton. Middleton then passed the puck to Park, who blasted it from just in front of the left point. Lambert's goal was assisted by John Van Boxmeer and Craig Ramsay. Lambert squeezed his shot through Moffat's pads. The puck remained in the crease behind the goalie. But Moffat didn't see it, and Lambert poked it in. The Bruins outshot the Sabres 38-25 and held an 18-3 shooting advantage in the second period. In that period, the Sabres failed to get off a shot on either of their power plays. Moffat joined the Bruins less than three weeks ago after his junior team's season ended. He played in Boston's last two regular-season games last weekend, winning them both. Islanders 8, Pen quins 1 UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP)- Mike Bossy and Clark Gillies scored early goals 52 seconds apart, and Bryan Trottier stretched his record postseason scoring streak to 26 games last night as the New York Islanders defeated Pittsburgh 8-1 in the first round of the National Hockey League playoffs. Trottier scored two goals and had an assist as the Islanders began their quest for a third straight Stanley Cup. GILLIES ALSO scored twice and added two assists, and the Islanders thoroughly dominated play. They outshot the Penguins 19-5 in the first period and 37-23 overall and set the club record of 24 consecutive home games without a loss. The Islanders have a 22-02-2 at Nassau Coliseum since Montreal beat them 5-4 last Dec. 29. The second game in the best-of-5 preliminary-round playoff series will be played here tonight. Bossy, who holds every NHL single-season scoring record for right wings, did not take a full turn because of a knee in- jury suffered in Sunday's regular-season windup, a 7-2 loss to the Penguins. But he started the scoring at 5:52, beating Pit- tsburgh goalie Michel Dion on a 20-footer from the right cir- cle with both teams a man short. TROTTIER, who has 16 goals and 24 assists in his 26-game playoff scoring streak, started the play by stripping the puck from defenseman Ron Stackhouse behind the Penguins' net. The Islanders' star "center had managed only one goal and seven assists in the final 10 regular-season games. Less than a minute later, Paul Baxter, another Pittsburgh defenseman, gave the puck away behind his net. The Islan- ders worked it to Gillies in the slot and he slid a shot into the unguarded right corner at 6:44 while Dion was screened by several players. Pat Boutette scored Pittsburgh's goal on a power-play at 14:42, beating New York goalie Bill Smith. But Trottier made it 3-1 at 18:56 when he backhanded Anders Kallur's rebound over a fallen Dion. John Tonelli set the play in motion when he avoided a hip check by Penguins defenseman Pat Price along the board. The Islanders pulled away by outscoring Pittsburgh, 3-0, in the second period. Gillies fought off Baxter and tipped in Mike McEwen's shot from the right point at 8:52, Trottier stuffed the puck past Dion from in close at 13:32 and Wayne Merrick put in a soft 20-foot backhander off Dion's pads at 16:24. Hurdle suffered an injury above the right eye that was not considered serious. Several Reds came out of the dugout after Hurdle was hit, and the Cubs' bench emptied on to the field. No punches were exchanged. Brares 6, Padres 4 SAN DIEGO (AP) - Dale Murphy stroked a single, double and home run and Brett Butler added three singles and drove in two runs as the Atlanta Braves defeated the San Diego Padres, 6-4, yesterday.
