Special to the Daily
PONTIAC - Orlando Blackman
banked in a 15-foot jumper with three
seconds left to lift the Dallas
Mavericks over Detroit, 121-120, and all
but end the Piston's drive towards ,the
playoffs.
The Pistons lost for the third timein
three nights dropping their record to
34-40, three games out of the sixth and
final playoff spot, with only eight games
remaining.
THE PISTONS squandered a 13-point
lead at the beginning of the fourth quar-
ter, but were still up by three, 120-117,
with 50 seconds left. 'But Kelly
Tripucka missed a 15-foot jumper and
Dallas scored on a Wayne Cooper tip-in
with 11 seconds left.
After a timeout, Tripucka could not
get the ball in-bounds from midcourt
and he called a timeout. Once again,
Tripucka could not in-bounds' the ball
and he was called for a five-second
violation, which gave Dallas the ball
and set up Blackman's winning shot.
John Long missed a 20-footer from the,
top of the key as time ran out.
Head coach ScottyRobertson would
not talk about the team's slim-to-none
chances of making the playoffs, but he
did talk about the game.
"That's one of the toughest to take, he
said. "I'm not taking the heat for this
one. Kelly didn't listen to my instruc-
tions. the instructions were that if you
can't inbounds the ball call a twenty
seconds time-out. He cost us the ball
game; it's that simple."
Tripucka acknowledged that it was
his mistake. "Robertson told me 'just
call timeout,' that was it," said
Tripucka. "I should have called a
second timeout or thrown it in."
