The Michigan Daily-Friday, April 2, 1982-Page 11 Schulte fills void left by By SARAH SHERBER When Bud Middaugh was hired as the head coach of the Michigan baseball team in July of 1980 he found a large hole in the outfield of Fisher Stadium. Someone was needed to fill the gap left in center field by the departure of Rick teach. Greg Schulte had just completed his first year at St. Clair Community College when Middaugh recruited him for this opening. Since then he has gone mn to become one of the Wolverines' more consistent and reliable players. LAST YEAR Schulte was second on the squad in hitting (his average of .360 as bettered only by Jim Paciorek's 367). And the 49 times he crossed the plate is a single season record for °Michigan. This season, the Warren native has again gotten off to a record setting pace. After 14 games he is currently sporting a .457 batting average, and again it is Paciorek who is the only Wolverine seeing regular play that can claim a better average (.477). .I think he's an outstanding player," said Middaugh of Schulte. "He's proven to be a team leader." SCHULTE'S main concerns now seem to be centered around the ball club. "My persd'nal goal is to help the team in any way that I can," said the center- fielder. "Most of my goals are team goals." Included in those goals is a return ap- pearance in the College World Series. Schulte has already made the trip twice and he feels that another trip is not out of the question. WITH GUYS like Paciorek, (Chris) Sabo, (Tony) Evans, (Jeff) Jacobson and the excellent pitching that we have, I think that we have a very good chance (of getting to the College World Series).". Right now Schulte is faced with a position that cannot be all that familiar to him - that of sitting on the bench. "He's coming off an ankle injury," explained Middaugh. "So we'll play him in one game and DH him in the next."- THE INJURY, as Schulte explains it, was caused by "horse play" in a physical education class. And though it has kept him from the playing field in a number of games, once the weather gets nicer Schulte is expected to return to his position oi a full time basis. Schulte, like any other student- athlete, must face the rigors of jugling an academic schedule with the com- mitment he has made to baseball. "It does take away a little from your studies, but you have to be more disciplined," said the senior of his two careers. BESIDES THE hours spent at prac- tice, there is the time Schulte must spend away from Ann Arbor on road trips. "There's a small advantage-when you play on the road," he said. "It brings the team together." Schulte has found one more advan- tage to road trips. Last year during the College World Series he met his future wife. WITH HIS senior year coming to an end, the exercise physiology major must now concentrate on his post- Michigan life. "I've been playing (baseball) for a long time," said Schulte. "I want to get drafted end play for the pros." Though Middaugh would not pass judgement on Schulte's chances in the professional league, he did admit that several scouts have looked at the out- fielder. THIS SEASON has been one of the best starts for the Michigan batsmen in a long time, and Schulte has given his all to help the 11-3 squad. "He certainly has been a factor in all our wins," said Middaugh of his out- fielder, who currently has a perfect fielding percentage. Leach Schulte and the rest of the Michigan baseball team will have a chance to prove their abilities today and tomorrow when they take on Miami of Ohio, at Oxford, in a pair of doubleheaders. The Redskins currently have a 5-4 record with all four of their losses having been against Southern Illinois. On Wednesday they defeated Wright State 4-2. Miami will probably start Kevin Davis (1.84) and Mike Carnegie (4.36) on the mound today. The leading hitter for the Redskins is first baseman Mark Monering whose average is currently .464 after nine games. This Candy Tastes Too Good To Be Low- Cal!
