SPORTS The Michigan Daily Tuesday, March 30, 1982 Page 8k AML -n da wolverine batsmen start season -p enrng against Eastern Michigan } , , , , ,, + By JIM DWORMANt The crackof the bat and the voice of the umpire calling the balls and strikes will be heard for the first time this year in Fisher Stadium when the Michigan baseballteam opens its, home season thiis afternoon with a doubleheader against Eastern Michigan. And the Hurons, though only sporting a 6-10-1 record, should provide the Wolverines with some stiff competition in the opener. "I KNOW they're going to have a good offensive club," said Michigan coach Bud Middaugh of the Hurons. "And they'll be just as good defensively as last year." In 1981, Eastern's defense was good enough to carry the team to the finals of the Mideast Regional in Ann Arbor, fil11: 11 i=11A l where it was defeated by Michigan. Offensively, the Hurons' punch is supplied by a lineup featuring four .300 hitters. Rightfielder Jim Irwin (.362, 14 RBI) leads the attack, followed closely by infielder Jim Riggs (.351), first baseman Scott Kemp (.348, 13 RBI), second baseman Howard Sim- mons (.315) and speedy centerfielder Greg Howe, who has stolen 10 bases in 11 attempts this year. JUNIOR righthander Mickey Weston (3 - 2, 4.68 ERA) istexpected to start the first game of the twin bill for Eastern and Jason Hanson (1-1, 1.88) is a good bet to start the nightcap. For Michigan, Middaugh tentatively plans to start sophomores Rich Stoll and Gary Wayne on the mound. Stoll currently owns a perfect, 3-0 record and has allowed only five earned runs in 22 innings pitched for an ERA of 2.05. Wayne split his two decisions in Texas despite having an ERA of only 1.50. Manning the bullpen for the Wolverines will be senior Tim Karazim (2.0, 0.00), junior Steve Ontivero (0-1, 6.75) and freshman Jeff Hayward and Matt Ruud. Hayward and Ruud, who thus far have combined to shut out their opponents in four and two-thirds in- nings pitched, are the probable starters in tomorrow's doubleheader against Grand Valley. THE MICHIGAN batting order, and positions in the field subject to change, will read like this: 1) Greg Schulte, center field; 2) Chuck Froning, right field; 3) Chris Sbor, third base; 4) Jim Paciorek, first base; 5) John Young, catcher; 6) Tony Evans, shortstop; 7) Rich Bair or Ken Hayward, designated hitter;8) Jeff Jacobson, second base; and 9) Dave Stober, left field. "I won't have a definite lineup until I see how they're hitting before the game," said Middaugh. One thing, however, is certian. A lot of power returns to the Wolverine lineup in the number one, three and four slots. As a leadoff hitter last year, Schulte compiled a batting average of .360 with three home runs and 35 RBI. This spring, the senior has connected for an average of .447. SABO HAD an outstanding freshman season -last year, batting .341 with a team record 10 homeruns and 40 RBI. Despite hitting the ball well when in Texas, however, Sabo managed only a .278 average. "I'm going to be batting third so I'll have to do better for the team to do well," he said. Paciorek, batting cleanup, has done just that. In the 11 game spring trip, the two-time All-Big Ten selection riped five home runs and batted in twelve runs on his way to a .528 average. Paciorek appears to be headed for his best season ever. Game time for today's doubleheader is 1 p.m. Admission will be one dollar. :0 .. , WOLVERINE BATSMEN John Clem (18) takes batting practice as Dave Stober (2) waits for his turn.
