Johnson leads scoring attack as Lakers down Pistons, 130-127 E HERE'S AN EASIER WAY By JESSE BARKIN Special tothe Daily PONTIAC- When the Los Angeles Lakers need the big play they look for one man, and one man only- Kareem Ab- dul Jabbar. Two times in the final 34 seconds, with the Lakers nursing one-point leads, they went to Jabbar, and both times he responded with baskets to clinch a 130-127 victory over the Pistons in a wild finish before 21,045 at the Silverdome. LEADING 126-1-25, Jabbar took a pass from Earvin John- son and scored on a sky hook over the Pistons' Kent Benson. But' Detroit came back quickly and cut the lead to one on a hook shot by John Long. Then, with 10 seconds left, Jabbar took a pass from Jamaal Wilkes and drove around Benson to ice the game. Ron Lee's three-point effort with three seconds left was not close. Johnson led all scorers with 40 points, including a crucial tip-in on a Wilkes missed layup with 1:23 left in the game to put the Lakers up by three, 126-123. Jabbar had 31 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. " !'They (the Lakers) go to the MVP in the league down the stretch and he makes every big shot," said Detroit coach Scotty Robertson. "If he misses any of those, we win the ball game, but he made them and that's why he's MVP." "I GOT SOMETHING on my hook shot," said Jabbar. "I got Kent in a one-on-one situation, and fortunately the shot fell." The Lakers looked like they would make a short evening of it, as they jumped to a 30-13 lead after seven minutes and took a 43-30 first quarter lead with Johnson scoring 18 points on nine for 10 shooting. But Detroit battled back and took the lead with six minutes remaining in the half, 53-52, on a jum- per by Benson. The game was close from then on, as there were 14 ties and 16 lead changes. "It was a great game," said Robertson. "It's our best game of the year." John Long scored 36 points for the Pistons, and Isiah Thomas added 28 and led Detroit's fourth quarter drive. Former Michigan standout Mike McGee made his professional debut in Michigan, and played effectively at times in his 14 minutes, scoring six points and grabbing four rebounds.
