(AP)- Derek Smith and Lancaster Gordon led 20th-ranked Louisville on two second-half scoring spurts, and the Cardinals upset seventh-ranked Minnesota 6761 last night in the Mideast Regional semifinals of the CAA tournament. .Twice, the undersized Cardinals raced to a lead, the first tine, surrendering it to a tenacious Minnesota team, the second time refusing to yield. LOUISVILLE earned the right to meet either Virginia or Alabama-Birmingham in the regional championship on Saturday, and the Cardinals earned it despite giving away size and bulk to Minnesota. Louisville's front-court players yielded seven inches to Mirnesota's 7-foot-3 Randy Breuer, but the Cardinals coun- terd with speed, jumping ability and a full court press that hounded and harassed the Big 10 champions into submission. Gordon scored 23 points and Smith had 17, all but five of thgse in the second half and each and every one of them coming when the Cardinats needed them most. Louisville led by one, 32-31, at the half, and the Cardinals scored 13 of the second-half's first 20 points to lead 45-38 with 15:58 to play. 9MITH STARTED that run with an alley oop and a steal and dunk, scoring six points in all in the run while Gordon ad- ded a pair of baskets. i'his time, however, the Cardinals could not make it stick. Minnesota ran off six straight points during a 5:15 stretch in which the Cardinals were held scoreless, and the Gophers trailed 45-44 at the 12:01 mark. Trent Tucker had four points for Minnesota in that stretch and two-and-a-half minutes later, a basket by Gary Holmes of Minnesota tied the score 48-48. LOUISVILLE, 22-9, scored 11 of the next 15 points in a 4:12 span, including six by Gordon and five by Smith, to take a seven point lead, 59-52, with 4:36 left. The Cardinals, NCAA Champions in 1980 and still using four of the same players from that starting squad, stretched the lead to as many as 10, 65-55, with 45 seconds left on a basket by Rodney McCray. Breuer and Tucker each had 22 points for Minnesota, 23-6, but the Cardinals held Breuer scoreless for a period of 13:47 late in the game. Georgia 90, Virginia Tech 73 ATHENS, Ga. (AP)- Dominique Wilkins exploded for 19 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to power the Georgia Bulldogs to a come-from-behind 90-73 quarterfinal National Invitation Tournament victory over Virginia Tech last night. The Bulldogs, 19-11, advanced to the semifinal round Mon- day night in New York's Madison Square Garden with the victory over the Hokies, 20-11. GEORGIA, WHICH trailed 38-33 at intermission, took charge in the second half. The Bulldogs scored the first five points to tie it before a three-point-play by Wilkins put the host team ahead to stay at 47-44 with 14:52 remaining. . . THE WOLVERINE victory was aided by home runs from both Rich Bair and Greg Schulte. Schulte's round-tripper in the third inning gave Michigan a 3-0 lead which it never relenquished. Wolverine Jim Paciorek had three singles in four trips to the plate, lifting is batting average to .640. Bill Shuta earned the win with a three-hitter, striking out one batter and walking four. Ferris names icer coach Dick Bertrand will replace Rick Duf- fett as head'hockey coach at Ferris State College, Athletic Director Dean Davenport announced yesterday. Duffett, 35, resigned after a 15-18-3, sixth-place finish in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) with a seven-year 119-83-7 career slate. BERTRAND, 40, was head coach at Cornell for 12 years and brings to the Bulldog program a 229-103-9 (.683) career record, one of the best among Division I coaches. "We conducted a national search," said Davenport. "And found an ex- cellent response, including many can- didates with Division I head coaching experience. "It was a difficult choice to make but we feel we made an outstanding selec- tion in Dick," he said. "He brings a wealth of experience and he has proven he has great strengths in recruiting and hockey knowledge." Bertrand's Cornell teams were NCAA runnerups in 1972 and fourth in 1973 and 1980. The coach is a Cornell alumunus and was a tri-captain of the undefeated 1970 National Championship team that finished with a 29-0 record. He was named head coach that same year. -MARTHA CRALL Colora - Boulder Where else can you raft down the Colorado River, study Shakespeare under the stars, and take classes with world-famous lecturers?
