The meet, the Univerity of Michigan Syn- chronized Swimming Regional Cham- pionships, drew one hundred fans to Margaret Bell Pool and featured the ve Big Ten schools that have teams. orthwestern, Michigan State, and Iowa ended-up well behind the second- place Wolverines, posting scores of 61.5, 31.0, and 23 points respectively. The Buckeyes, the nation's top-ranked team, were led by national team members Karen and Sara Josephson and Karen Callaghan, who between them captured first place in the senior figures; duet, and trio events. Michigan was leading the meet ith only one event remaining, the team routine, thanks in large part to first-place finishes by Jill Schultz in the novice figures and Tracy Rehbein in the junior figures, and a second-place per- formance by the trio of Betsy Neira, Cathleen O'Brien, and Erin O'Shaughnessy. But first - and third- place finishes' by Ohio State in the team routine clinched the meet. THE WOLVERINES' two point loss to Ohio State is the most recent entry in a series of close contests between the two schools. "We can beat them; we're getting closer and closer," said Michigan assistant coach Laura LaCursia. "We have the best chance to beat them this year that we've ever had. But to beat them, everything would have to fall into place." The meet's most obvious "fall" in- volved Wolverine Coach Joyce Lin- deman, who was wading in the pool as the fans left the stands. After the Ohio State team presented Lindeman with a cake for "all the support she's given the sport," the Blue swimmers pushed her into the water. "No one in this sport has worked harder for it and promoted it more than Joyce L indeman," said Buckeye Coach Mary Jo Ruggieri. RUGGIERI had nothing but praise and sympathy for the Michigan team and nothing but contempt for the athletic department which she blames for revoking its varsity status. "I've travelled with (the Michigan) team and its coach and they're one of the most well-respected in the world. They represent the University, its students, and alumni with pizzazz all over the world. And I think it's a crime that the athletic department doesn't have the foresight to invest in this program. I think the rule the athletic department used to revoke the varsity status (since No NCAA or Big Ten championship is held in a sport, it cannot be considered a varsity sport) is baloney. If an athletic department wants to cut a sport they can think of a rule." Despite yesterday's post-meet ceremonies, thescontestsdid not mark the end of thetWolverine season, neither did it signify the end of the team (it will continue as a club sport). Further- more, it wasn't the last of Lindeman's coaching career as she will continue to coach the club. The team's final meet of this season wil be the AIAW Cham- pionships at Columbus in two weeks. While litigation is still pending that could affect the synchro's non-varsity future, a Michigan varsity team and the scholarships that go with it is the remotest of possibilities. Ruggieri con- cluded: "What the athletic department has done is condemn (the Michigan) team to mediocrity." E Fast and to Your Home! In any event, the Spartans held on a for a 3-2 victory over the Huskies in their semi-final game of the Central WCollegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) playoffs last night before a crowd of 9,821 at Joe Louis Arena. THE HUSKIES never lead in the con- test and despite a 13-5 Tech shot advan- tage in the first period, the Huskies suf- fered an early 2-goal deficit. Newell Brown and Mark Hamway scored in the first period and Brown netted the game winner in the third. Mike Nepi and Ron Zuke tallied for 6ech. ,Despite early pressure on Scott, Brown scored on a slap shot from the top of the right circle after an apparent of- fsides was not called. Todd Gardiner and Ken Leiter assisted on the 1:40 goal. - HAMWAY capitalized at 18:06 on a breakaway to give the Spartans a 2-0 edge. Nepi brought the Huskies to within one goal on a nifty backhander from in close at 9:58 of the second period. However, Brown came back at 4:12 of the final stanza to pad the Spartan lead. The shot came from goalie Tom Allen's left, and the puck went right through the crease and by Allen's right leg into the far corner of the net. ZUKE BROUGHT the battle back to a 1-goal affair at 11:20. He took a rebound, shot at Scott and somehow the puck got under the sophomore netmin- der and slid slowly over the goal line. After State got untracked, it outshot Tech, 36-30. The victory put the Spar- tans in the championship game against Notre Dame while the Huskies will take on Bowling Green in the consolation game (4:00p.m. today). Fourth-seeded Notre Dame earned a spot in the finals by surprising first- seeded Bowling Green, 8-5. BOWLING Green took a 3-1 first period lead on goals by Tim Hack, George McPhee, Brian Hills after Krt Bjork had put Notre Dame up 1-0 at 4:23. But a 5-goal burst by the Irish in the second stanza put them up for good. Dave Poulin spearheaded the Notre Dame effort, netting two goals while t Jeff Logan, Adam Parsons and Mark Doman added one apiece. Despite a valiant Bowling Green ef- fort at the very end, Notre Dame's Bill Rothstein scored a short handed, empty net goal with only 32 seconds left to propel the Irish into the championship game (7:00p.m. tonight).
