The Michigan Daily-Friday, March 12, 1982-Page 13 SPORTS OF THE DAILY Dietz honor-at's academic By CHRIS WILSON Diane Dietz, co-captain of the Michigan Women's basketball team, was the nation's top vote-getter in the balloting for this year's academic All- .American squad. This marked the second year that Dietz was elected to first-team honors by the members of the College Sports Information Direc- tors of America. "I'm really honored and surprised," said Dietz, the leading scorer in Big Ten women's basketball history, upon lear- ning of the award. "This season was so satisfying that I didn't even think about personal accolades. In the past the losses were so discouraging that you sometimes said 'What can I get for this?' But this year it was too fun to worry about those things. Still I'm very pleased." The only Michigan woman ever to score more than 2,000 points in her career (2,067), Dietz led Michigan toi a 17-9 record in her final season averaging 21.6 points a game. It was the best record in Michigan's nine-year history. Dietz, who was a second team Academic All-American as a sophomore, has a 3.52 grade point in general studies. Georgia advances in NIT ATHENS, (AP) - Acrobatic Dominique Wilkins jammed in a pair of slam dunks midway through the second half to snap a tie and ignite Georgia to a 73-60 college basketball victory over Temple last night in a National In- vitation Tournament first-round game. Georgia will host the winner of Friday night's Maryland-Richmond game in a second round NIT contest here Monday night. Wilkins, who scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, aroused the slim crowd of 5,161 and his teammates with his ex- plosive dunks only 30 seconds apart to break a 48-48 tie and put the Bulldogs ahead to stay at 52-48. GEORGIA, 17-11, ran off a 16-4 spurt triggered by the acrobatics of Wilkins, who had six points in the run. Freshman Gerald Crosby, who had 14 points, had eight points during the eight-minute explosion that put the Bulldogs ahead 64-52 with 5:55 remaining. Tigers trip Twins, 6-3 LAKELAND, Fla. The Tigers, 2-2, jumped off to a 2-0 lead in the first inning behind a run- scoring double by shortstop Alan Trammell and an RBI single by Cabell, who was recently acquired by the Tigers from San Francisco. After Cabell's three-run blast, the Tigers made it 6-0 on a run-scoring single by outfielder Les Filkins. Detroit right-hander Dave Rozema started and pitched three innings, allowing just one hit and no runs. He struck out five and walked none. Larry Pashnick picked up the save for Detroit, coming on in the ninth. Valenzuela in Mexico LOS ANGELES (AP) - Holdout Fernando Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Dodgers has returned to his native Mexico to await a decision on his salary demands, his agent says. "He will wait there until something positive happens in the talks," Tony DeMarco, who has been negotiating for the left-handed pitcher, said Thurs ay. DeMARCO SAID Valenzuela, the Cy Young Award winner as a rookie last year, "will keep in training." DeMarco added that Valenzuela had "been wanting to do this return to Mexico for some time." DeMarco said he hasn't talked with a representative of the Dodgers since last Sunday. Valenzuela is reportedly seeking a $1 million annual salary while the club has offered $350,000.
