4 BGSU,,MSU REACH SEMI-FINALS CCHA By MARTHA CRALL Four more teams saw their 1981-82 seasons end after this weekend's Cen- tral Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) first-round playoffs. Only the top eight of the 11 teams par- ticipated, and the field has now been honed down to the league's final four, who travel to Detroit for this weekend's CCHA Championships. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic NCAA first-round berth. THERE WERE few surprises, as the four home teams ,won their two-game total-goals series. Seasons ended for Northern Michigan, Lake Superior State, Ferris State and Michigan, while Bowling Green, Michigan State, Michigan Tech and Notre Dame con- tinue for at least one more week. Bowling Green recorded the largest margin of victory, shutting out Nor- thern Michigan, 8-0, on Saturday, and bombing the Wildcats, 10-5, on Sunday to take the series, 18-5. narroi Falcon Perry Braun netted a three- goal hat trick in the opener and goalie Mike David saved 26 Wildcat shots in the whitewashing. NICK BANDESCU scored three goals and three assists on the weekend for Bowling Green. In Sunday's contest, Northern's Bruce Martin notched three goals and one assist, accounting for four of the five Wildcat points. to final four Page 10-Tuesday, March 9, 1982--The Michigan Daily CIub Sports Roundup Michigan State 9-3, Lake Superior 1-4 (Michigan State wins series, 12-5) The Spartans were favored, but sur- prised even themselves by blowing out Lake Superior Friday, 9-1. The Lakers won the battle, 4-3, on Saturday but lost the war 12-5. After a scoreless first period in the opener, the Spartans busted loose for five second period goals and four third period scores. Lyle Phair collected two goals in the win. Laker Dave Keegan scored the game- winner in the finale.uMichigan State's Gary Haight dished out four assists in the series to become the first Spartan defenseman to total 40 points in a season since the 1973-74 season. MSU's Hockey Magazine Poll In their last 30 games, the Falcons have gone 26-4, all four losses byha total of four goals, while outscoring their op- ponents, 196-99. 24 wins, 15 at home, are both Spartan single-season records. Michigan Tech 7-3, Ferris State 4-3 (Michigan Tech wins series, 10-7) Resigning Ferris coach Rick Duffett ended his career yith a 3-3 tie on Satur- day, but it wasn't enough, as the Bulldogs lest to Michigan Tech, 7-4, on Friday. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opener, but in a 14-second span just a minute later, the Huskies knotted the score, afterwhich they poured on four more goals to bury Ferris. The penalty-marred game (16 minors for the Bulldogs, 14 for the Huskies) saw Tech outshoot Ferris, 40-22. On Saturday the Huskies' Bill Terry scored Tech's 20th shorthanded goal of the season to open the scoring. Later, though, Tony Stiles salvaged the tie for the Huskies with only 31 seconds left in the game. Notre Dame's Jeff Logan won CCHA Player-of-the-week honors in the Irish sweep of Michigan (6-5 and 5-3). In a non- regional tournament at Miami (O.) Saturday, the Michigan spikers finished fourth out of six teams. Their actual play was better than what the final placing indicates. "We played really well considering the fact we were missing two star- ters," said team manager Martin McFadden. "Last year the varsity team took fourth in this same tournament, so in comparison we did well." In the tournament each team played each other twice and then the top two teams got byes to the semi-finals. Since Michigan only lost to Notre Dame and Miami, it was the number one seed in the quarter finals. In the quarter finals the Wolverines easily disposed of little Blufton College from Ohio, 2-0. However, in the semi-finals the spikers met their nemesis Notre Dame, who disposed of the Wolverines for the second time of the day. In the con- solation game Michigan lost a heartbreaker to Ohio Wesleyan, 15-13, and thus finished in fourth place. Miami went on to beat Notre Dame in the finals to capture first place. BOWLING The bowling club travelled to Saginaw Valley February 21 and finished off its season with matches against Wayne State and Michigan State at the Crooked Creek Lanes. The first match pitted the Wolverine squad against Wayne State, who is posted as the number one team in the Metro division. Michigan-took. two points in the match but lost five points. The second match put Michigan up against the out-state champions Michigan State with the Wolverines coming out, 2-5. "We finished second in the out-state division with a record of 110-57," said.2 Michigan's Jon Reed. The out-state division encompasses all the teams in Michigan except for Detroit teams who make up the Metro division. Presen- tly the team is awaiting confirmation as to whether it qualified for the Nationals. CRNOSS COUNTR Y SKIING With the snow still falling the Wolverine cross country racers are still skiing. Two members of the Michigan squad, Sam James and Mike Muha, recen- tly competed in the Ken-Mar Classic race on February 21. James finished the 10-kilometer race with a time of 38:03 which was good enough to earn him second place in the 25-34 age class and placed him seventh overall. Muha came through the-race marking a time of 39:20, which gave him a third place seat in the 18-24 age class.
