N. Illino MAC cri By JIM DWORMAN Allen Rayhorn, held in check through most of the second half by a tough Ball State zone defense, sank two free throws with 32 seconds remaining in overtime to lead Northern Illinois to a 79-75 victory over the Cardinals in the championship game of the Mid- American Conference tournament last night in Crisler Arena. After he was fouled by Ball State's Rick Hampton, Rayhorn connected on both ends of the one-and-one to give his team an insurmountable 77-71 lead. Ball State missed its next shot and Nor- thern Illinois' Tim Dillon then in- creased the lead to eight with a six-foot jumper from the lane. The Cardinals' C.C. Fullove hit two jump shots of his own to close the gap to its final, three- point margin. RAYHORN, WHO scored 15 of his team-leading 23 points in the first half, believed his team's discipline was the deciding factor in the game's outcome. 'We just kept taking our time and worked for good shots," he said. In the overtime period,' Rayhorn and the Huskies scored 21 points, with only two shots coming from outside of 15 feet. Ball State, on the other hand, hurried its shots in the additional stanza. "I had a terrible start but I realized I could catch the Ohio State guy (George Nicholas). I won it in the last five yards. " The senior's second triumph came in the 300-yard dash when he set a new . school record of 30.04. SHELBY Johnson took advantage of his last chance to qualify for next weekend's NCAA Championship. Northern Illinois had a chance to win the game in regulation, as it controlled the ball for the final two minutes. of the second half, but the Huskies had to set- tle for the overtime victory when Leonard Hayes missed a jump shot from the corner and Rayhorn couldn't connect on the rebound at the buzzer. HUSKIE COACH John McDougal credited his team's defense with being responsible for the victory, especially the efforts of sophomore guard Hayes. ,The overall key had to be our defen- se," said McDougal. "Leonard Hayes, did a great job on Ray McCallum and their (Ball State's) offense certainly begins with him." - McCallum, whose 21st birthday was tarnished by the defeat, hit on only five of 13 shots and finished the night with 14 points, less than half of the 30 he scored in Friday night's semi-final victory over Western Michigan.' By JESSE BARKIN Bowling Green State University's Marcus Newbern sank four free throws in the final 1:44 to ice the contest as the Falcons held on to beat Western Michigan, 86-83, in the consolation game of the MAC tournament yester- day at Crisler Arena. Bowling Green was almost flawless at the foul line,- sinking 26 of 30 attem- pts, and Newbern pumped in 32 points, 21 in the second half. "THIS WAS a typical MAC down-to- the-wire game," said Falcon coach John Weinert. "What we tried to do was to isolate Marcus (Newbern) down low, and he does that very well." With two minutes left in the game and the Falcons nursing a two-point lead, 5- 9 guard David Greer found Newbern wide open under the basket for an easy lay-up to give Bowling Green an 81-77 lead. After a missed free throw by Western's Mike Seberger, Newbern grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He made the foul !shots to put the Falcons ahead by six, 83-77. WESTERN'S Walker D. Russell (brother of former U-M star Campy) then hit a long jumper, but Bowling Green stalled for more than a minute and Newbern was finally fouled with :35 remaining. His two free throws put the Falcons up 85-79 and put the game .out of reach. Bronco forward Jasper McElroy led- the losers with 31 points; Russell added 22, but only four of those came after in- termission as the Bowling Green zone defense forced Russell out of the Bron- co offense. At the start of the game Western broke out to a quick 12-0 lead, but when the Falcons finally decided to join in on the scoring they did it with flaip, coun- tering with nine unanswered points of their own. From that point on, neither team led by more than six. The Broncos took a 40-39 halftime lead. Bowling Green's David Jenkins scored 21 points oo eight for 13 shooting while Western shot a blistering 64 per- cent from the field-in the loss.
