Despite a valiant Wolverine three- goal scoring drive in the third period, Notre Dame was able to crush Michigan's Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoff drive, downing the Blue icers 5-3 last night at the Athletic and Convocation Center in South Bend. Michigan ended its season with a 18-15-5 overall record (14-12-4). Because of Friday night's 6-5 Notre Dame victory, Michigan needed a two- goal win in order to advance from this weekend's total goal playoff series to the $10 OFF All Rings March 8-12 semi-finals next weekend at Joe Louis Arena. The Wolverines came back from the locker room to start the third period at a four-goal disadvantage last night. Notre Dame was quick to widen the scoring gap as right winger Dae Logan tallied his second goal of the game at the 3:30. The senior icer took a Tex Bellomy pass down the left wing and flipped it into the right side of the net to give his team what amounted to a five- goal, insurmountable lead. TED SPEERS retaliated just thirteen seconds later, scoring the Wolverines' first goal of the game at 3:43. The Ann Arbor native, at the right face-off cir- cle, fired a Dave Richter pass on target. Speers scored again at 7:08, this time on a pass from Brian Lundberg. The junior center flipped the puck past Notre Dame goalie Dave Laurion to notch the Wolveirnes' only power play goal. Lundberg lit the goal light just five seconds later at 7:13. The senior defen- seman, at the edge of the right faceoff circle, slapped the puck past Laurion to nab the Wolverines' last goal of the game. WITH LESS than five minutes left in the first period, it looked as if the period would end in a 0-0 deadlock as neither team had been able to assemble an ef- fective offensive drive. Then, at 16:54, Irishman Rex Dellony notched what was to be the first goal of a Notre Dame Sad ending three-goal, Wolverine-humbling spree. The Irish center took a Jeff Perry pass around the back of the net and slipped it past Michigan goalie Jon Elliott into the right side of the net. Just twenty-three seconds later on what should have been a Michigan power play, Notre Dame notched its second goal. Left winger Bill Rothstein, unassisted, stole a Michigan puck and slapped it to the left of a more-than-a- bit-surprised Elliott. EXACTLY ONE minute later at 18:19, Jeff Logan chalked up the Irish's second shorthanded, unassisted goal. The Grosse Pointe, Michigan native came around the back side of the net and slipped in his tenth goal of the season to send the Wolverines to the locker room with a three-goal deficit. The penalties box saw the majority of the second period action, as again neither team was able to score until the last five minutes. It was Irish icer Joe Bowie who scored, grabbing the fourth Notre Dame goal at 18:17. The defenseman, just outside the left circle, flipped a shot over Elliott's head. The puck hit the net's crossbar and landed squarely in the net. That was Notre Dame's third1 unassisted goal of the game. Notre Dame will take on CCHA- leading Bowling Green Falcons next weekend in the semi-final round of the CCHA championships at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena. a Hours 11:00-4:00 Data Machines Co. of Ann Arbor Cordially invites You to a Showing of the New Commodore Business Machines Super Pet'mcomputer The only micro with five resident languages On March I0, 1982 from 9:00am - 5:00pm To be located in room C, of the Michigan League Personnel from the Commodore computer division will be in attendance to answer questions on all Commodore Computer Products.
