SPORTS ie Michigan Doily: Friday, March 5, 1982 Page 10 Cagei By MARK FISCHER special to the Daily ;WEST LAFAYETTE- In a contest 4ich at times resembled more of a O~ockdown brawl than a basketball me,k Purdue TKOed Michigan 9077, last night in Mackey Arena. .The referees called 'a total of six *hnical calls, including four against l0ichigan in the second half, which llped the Boilermakers break open a tight but contact-filled game. "The game was physical, and anytime it gets real physical it's to our disadvantage," said Michigan coach Bill Frieder. Purdue outshot Michigan from the floor, 65 to 51 percent, and outreboun- ded the visitors, 32-22. The Boiler- makers point total was the highest tur- ned out by any one team in a Big Ten game this season. "IT GOES back to our matchups," said Frieder. "We're just too small to guard a team like Purdue." "Edmonson is a tall guard and we had trouble matching up on him," said Michigan captain Thad Garner. "He took us inside and he was hard to stop." rs trounced, Edmonson, Scearce lead Boilermakers )0-77 stanza to take a 50-46 lead at 14:17. It was then that the referees took over. In a span of 1:39 the zebras called three technicals against Wolverines, one on guard Eric Turner and a pair of two shot bench techs on Frieder. At any rate, when the little "tea par- ty" was over, Purdue had scored eight straight points to go up, 55-46. Yet neither Frieder nor Michigan guard Dan Pelekoudas felt the technicals had a great deal of bearing on the final result. "The turning point came after the techicals, we fought back and fought back and then two times in a row we came down and had good shots and neither onenof them fell," said Pelekoudas, Garner tallied team highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds himself, and in doing so became only the 19th Wolverine ever to score over 1,000 career points. The 6- 7 senior needs just 11 more rebounds in Michigan's final two games to become only the seventh Blue cager to top both 1,000 points and 600 boards. Michigan had a particularly tough time matching up with Boilermaker guard Keith Edmonson. The 6-5 senior hit on 14 of 19 field goals to lead all scorers with 34 points and take the lead in the conference scoring race from In- diana's Ted Kitchel. Purdue forward Mike Scearce added 10 rebounds and 18 points on 8 for 13 shooting, but was ejected from the game with 8:26 left when he hit Leslie Rockymore in the face after the Wolverine guard stole the ball from him. ROCKYMORE wasn't sure if the shot was intentional, but said that Scearce was "kind of upset." "EARLIER IN the game we both went up for a rebound and I brushed him in the face," said Rockymore. "I don't know if it carried into the game." After a close first half which included nine lead changes and eight ties, and ended with the score tied at 35-35, Pur- due came on strong early in the second s Boiled over MICHIGAN MinFG/AFT/A PURDUE MinFG/A FT/A R A PF Pts Garner..........
