The Michigan Daily-Thursday, March 4, 1982-Page 9 Sicko named new U-D cager coach SPORTS OF THE DAILY Netters triumph in Texas tourney by BOB WOJNOWSKI Michigan assistant basketball coach Don Sicko was named head coach at the University of Detroit yesterday, replacing the fired Willie Mclarter, who compiled a 33-48 record in three seasons at Detroit. Detroit Athletic Director Brad Kin- sman made the announcement at a press conference at Calihan Hall. Sicko, 34, became the top cqn- didate for the post when Eastern Michigan head coach Jim Boyce withdrew his name from con- sideration last week. The Wayne State graduate spent 12 years coaching in the high school ranks and then held brief assistant coaching positions at both U of D and Kent State. Sicko was finishing off his second year at Michgan. "DETROIT'S program has been a success in the past," said Sicko at the' announcement. "There's no reason to think it can't be done again." Well-respected for both his teaching and recruiting abilities, Sicko got a high recommendation for the job from Michigan head coach Bill Frieder. "One of the biggest commitments I have to my assistants is if they° come here and work hard, then I'll do everything I can to help them get a better job," said Frieder. "Don has come in here and done a great job and it's a great opportunity for him." Frieder said-that he did not feel Sicko's leaving would hurt Michigan's recruiting this season, but that finding a replacement would be the big chore. "It'll be a little while yet (before someone is hired)," said Frieder. "After our games this week we'll finish up the recruiting and then we'll get on it." DePaul's Grubbs quits CHICAGO (AP) - Junior. forward Teddy Grubbs, once considered a promising player for the No. 2-ranked DePaul Blue Demons, has withdrawn from school. He said in a prepared statement that he would probably be academically ineligible to play next season, but he "hopes to play basketball again for DePaul." The 6-8 Grubbs, who played in 17 games this season and averaged 6.7 points per game, has not been with the team since Jan. 30. Unless Grubbs goes to summer. school, which he told the university is unlikely, he will not meet NCAA eligibility requirements for the 1982-83 season. Worthy considers NBA CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP)- Junior, forward James Worthy will turn professional after the college basket-, ball season ends if the conditions are' right, says North Carolina Coach Dean Smith: Smith says he talked with Worthy at* the start of the season and that his 6-91 star wasn't expecting the conversatipfn. But he added that once he mentioned the subject, options were discussed. "IF I KNEW for sure that James would be the first player picked and by a good team for'him, I would suggest he go," Smith said. NBA rules, instituted after the 1981 draft of college athletes, forbid a tearn from talking with undergraduates until those players have declared theni selves eligible for the professional draft. t Siho a new U of D head coach WOL VERINPES TAKE MARK AT BIG TENS: Tankersse No. N ame, Pos. Last year, the Iowa Hawkeyes ended the Hoosiers' 20- year reign as Big Ten swimmers ex- traordinaire, but tie Indiana squad is the favorite to take the title again this year. Besides having to deal. with the Hoosiers, the Michigan Wolverines will have to contend with the problem of the lack of depth on their team. While there are several members of the squad with a shot at finishing in the top three, the lack of depth, a problem, which has worried head coach Gus Stager all year, will prevent the Wolverines from being able to challenge for the top team spots. THE HIGHEST finishers for Michigan last year were Tom Ernsting and Ron Merriott, both of whom daptured third place finishes. Ernsting finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Merriott, a two time NCAA All- American, took third place on both the one-meter and the three-meter boards. Both Ernsting and Merriott are back with the squad again this year, and both are expected to do well at the Big Ten meet. The presence of Fernando Canales on ;he Wolverine squad, after being red- shirted for a year, is one reason to ,believe that the Michigan tankers could be more of a factor than they were last year. The senior.free styler won seven Big Ten titles, in the two seasons before his being red-shirted last year and he should play a major role in the free- style. ANOTHER Wolverine tanker who is a strong bet for a Big Ten title is Bruce Gemmell, the only junior letter winner on the Michigan squad, is very strong in both the 200-yard backstroke and in the 400-yard individual medly. The junior tanker seems confident about his chances, even though Iowa's Tom Roemer, the defending Big Ten champion in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events, as well as in the 200- yard individual medly, will be there to challenge him. "I think I'll be ex- tremely competitive in the Big Ten's for a championship," said Gemmell. Last year, under coach Bill Farley, the Wolverine squad wasn't even in the title chase as it failed to win even one event, and only managed 393 points for a fourth place finish. The champion Iowa squad garnered 710.5 points. GOALIE STATISTICS Goalie (Records) GP Min. GA Avg P. Mason (8-4-1) ... 16 713:41 36 3.03 J. Elliott (9-9-4) .... 24 1389:26 77 3.33 m.
