The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, March 2, 1982-Page 11 Club Sports Roundup CROSS CO UNTR Y SKIING With no more collegiate races on their schedule, three Michigan Club skiers decided to trek up to the Great White North for the Charlevoix Win- dmill Farms Cross Country Ski Race. Marc Gallin, Mike Muha, and Samuel James certainly knew the easiest Way to go as they each placed in the races. In the two-kilometer event Muha finished fourth overall and second in his age group with teammate James trailing right behind him in fifth place. James also finished second in his age group. Meanwhile Marc Gallin, who was competing in the five-kilometer event, was third overall and first among his age group. Gallin's time of 18:45 put him at a six minute per mile pace. The Charlevoix ski race was indicative of the types of races that many of the cross country skiers have had to compete in this year. In the past the Cross Country team has had to live in the shadows of the downhill team and thus has had difficulty in finding sponsors for races. "We're not as big as alpine around here," said Gallin. "We don't have many collegiate races so we compete in citizens' races such as the one in Charlevoix which is just for ourselves." DOWNHILL SKIING For the Michigan downhill racers the season came to a disappointing close as they finished fifth in the National Qualifiers. Only the top two teams in the meet, which consisted of teams from Indiana and Iowa, went on to the nationals. Despite the disappointing finish, the rest of the season was a success for the Blue racers. In their Wednesday night series at Alpine, Michigan finished first beating out teams from Michigan State, Oakland, Akron, and Bowling Green. VOLLE YBALL During the week before Spring break, the volleyball team was busy playing and winning. The week started off in fine fashion as it shut out Toledo, 3-0, on Thursday. On Saturday, Earlham College was the next victim as Michigan won, 3-2, before a home crowd. The week concluded with a tour- nament on Sunday at Walled Lake High School, The tourney didn't go as well as the team had hoped as it lost in the semi-finals to an Ann Arbor squad made up of graduate students and other Ann Arbor residents. The spikers go back into action this week as they travel to Ohio to play Miami on Saturday. The Club Sports Roundup relates briefly the activities of Michigan club sports during the previous week. This week's information was compiled by Daily sports writer Randy Berger. Count Bill of Rights Article IV: An Act Surely to Keep Your Wallet Inflated and Your Family Content. Wisconsin came in third place with 97. "We thought it would be pretty close we were kind of surprised by Wiscon- sin," said Michigan coach Jack Har- vey. VINCE BEAN and Derek Harper, who had been dominating the long jump event in recent meets, again finished first and second. It was the first time this season, however, that Bean was able to outjump Harper as his first place jump of 24'101/2" topped Harper's leap by two inches. One week later, at the Wolverine In- vitational in Ann Arbor, the duo again finished one-two with Bean jumping 25'3 ", and Harper going 24'1/4". Bean's jump qualified him for the NCAA track meet to be held March 12- 13 at the Pontiac Silverdome. Brian Diemer also qualified for the meet by winning the mile run with a time of 4:04.15. He later doubled by winning the two mile run and was named Outstanding Athlete of the Cen- tral Collegiate meet. MIKE SHEA'S second place finish in the 1000-yard run was also fast enough to earn him an invitation to the National meet, as he crossed the tape with a time of 2:09.81. During the Wolverine Invitatiothal Andrew Bruce set a new field house and school record for the 300-yard dash winning the event with a time of 30.21. The Wolverine's next meet will be the SPORTS~ ONTI Big Ten Championships this weekend at Indiana. Netters have bad break For mostestudents, spring break began on February 19, but for the Michigan men's tennis team that date marked thestart of the first on- nual Seminole Invitational. The three day tournament pitted Michigan again- st Florida State, -Auburn, and Miami (Fla.). The results of the first day of play posted Michigan over Florida State, 7-2, and Miami over Auburn, 7-2. On the second day Michigan went down in defeat to Auburn, 7-2, while Miami beat Florida State, 7-2. The final day saw Michigan fall again by a score of 7-2 against Miami while Auburn defeated Florida State, 5-4. Michigan's Michael Leach did not fare as well as usual-he won only one of his three singles matches. Mark Mees came out a little better winning two of his three singles matches in the second position. Leach and Mees teamed up to play position doubles and posted two wins out of their three mat- ches. The Wolverine netters are presently in Texas competing in the Corpus Christi Team tournament which began yesterday. -TAM BENTLEY Tankers triumph The Michigan men's swim team completed its regular season schedule on" February 20 as the Wolverines trounced Michigan State by a score of 72-41. Leading the tankers to their fifth dual meet victory against one defeat was Fernando Canales whose time in the 200- yard freestyle qualified him for the NCAA championships. Strong perfor- mances were also turned in by diver Ron Merriott, who remained un- defeated for his career in dual meets, and Mark Noetzel, who achieved a season best in the 50-yard freestyle.
