SPORTS The Michigan Daily Tuesday, March 2, 1982 Page 9 Icers wilt d By MARTHA CRALL The Michigan hockey team, which entered its spring break games in third place, withered down the stretch, finished in a tie for fourth place, and lost home-ice advantage in this weekend's first round of Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) playoffs. Two weekends ago the icers traveled to tenth-place Ohio State and split with the Buckeyes, losing on Friday, 3-1, and taking the second game, 4-1. Ted $peers scored his third shorthanded second period of the first game, as Mark Hamway scored a hat-trick and Brown and Lyle Phair each netted two goals. Lake Superior 3-2, Northern Michigan 0-5 The Lakers split their home-and- home series with Northern Michigan, shutting out the Wildcats,3-0, in Sault Ste. Marie and losing the rematch in Marquette, 5-2. Lake Superior's Lawrence Dyck had only to save 17 shots in the Friday whitewashing as Mickey Candler's two goals provided more than enough points for the victory. THE SPLIT LEFT the two teams in a tie for seventh place in the final stan- dings, but Lake Superior won the tie- breaker to earn the seventh seed. Western Michigan 6-8, Notre Dame 3-10 Western Michigan edged the Irish, 6- 3, in the opener of the two-game series in South Bend, but Notre Dame came r .owstretch back to win the finalein a 10-8 shoot-out. with 210 points. Michigan State 10-3, Ferris State 2-4 MICHIGAN STATE failed in its bid for the league championship as it split with Ferris State, winning 10-2, in East Lansing on Friday and dropping the finale in Big Rapids, 4-3.
