The Michigan Daily-Thursday, February 18, 1982-Page9 SPORTS OF THE DAILY Synchros fight to keep varsity status alive By LA VBRA CLAK The contents of Title IX will be the defense in a debate between Don Canham, the Board in Con- trol p1f Intercollegiate Athletics, and the women's synchronized swimming team. The debate will center on the recent decision of the Board to discontinue the synchronized swim team as a varsity sport next year. The team has been the only one cut next year by the Athletic Board, and in the opinion of one m. member, "the team is not going to take it Iting down." TITLE IX, established one year ago to equalize the treatment of women's sport with men'p, says there must be an equal number of women's and men's sports at a collegiate level. This year Michigan rostered 11 women's and 11 men's varsity teams. With the cut to the Syn- chronized Swimming Team, the score comes out uneven-Women 10, Men 11. The board's cut has its justification based in the male dominated sports organization NCAA. The team was scheduled to compete as a NCAA team next season instead of its former league, the AIAW. However, the NCAA does not sponsor women's synchronized swimming teams. Yesterday, Athletic Direktor Don Canham met with the team's Coach Joyce Lindeman, the team mentor for eight years, in an effort to negotiate a review. Canham told Lindeman the Board's decision is final and the team will not be given a review. Just eight years ago Canham asked Lindeman to coach the synchronized swimmers, the first women's varsity team in Michigan history. In her career at Michigan, Lindeman has taken her team to every national championship, a claim no other Wolverine team can make. THE TEAM members will fight for the team's existence on the Varsity roster. A letter ex- plaining the.team's position will be circulated to top sports personnel around the country in hopes of drumming, up support for the team fight to maintain its Varsity status. The Michigan team members will not be the only ones affected by the elimination. One mem- ber raised an argument for the team: "If Michigan is cut who will Ohio State have to com- pete with?" The Wolverines---are currently ranked as the number three team in the nation behind Big Ten rival Ohio State. Without com- petition the Buckeyes could experience a similar set-back. "And if Ohio State drops their Varsity, number one Arizona could be doomed." Team members also argue that the elimination of their team could result in a "domino effect" that will eventually end in the sport's finish in intercollegiate competition. Pistons trade Hubbard PONTIAC (AP) - Detroit forward Phil Hub- bard, a former Miehigan All-American, and cen- ter Paul Mokeski are headed to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for power forward Kenny Carr and reserve center Bill Laimbeer, Pistons spokesman Bill Kreifeldt said yesterday. The deal was completed just before the National Baskerball Association's trading deadline of midnight Tuesday, Kreifeldt said. TO ACQUIRE CARR AND Laimbeer, Detroit also agreed to give Cleveland the lesser of the Pistons' two choices in the first round of the 1982 NBA draft, plus a second-round pick, he added.
