After fighting their way back from a 13-point deficit, the Wolverines found themselves within five points with two minutes left. That's when the trouble began, as Dean Hopson was called for a questionable foul and Michigan coach Bill Frieder reacted too strongly as he was assessed a technical foul, the second of the game against Michigan. THE GAME quickly disintegrated in- to a foul-shooting contest, as Michigan State scored 14 of its last 16 from the charity line. "The officiating did not beat us, we did," said Frieder. However, Frieder need not blame himself for the loss, he had only to look on the opposite side of the court to find the main reason - Michigan State's freshman sensation, Sam Vincent. THE HOMETOWN favorite poured in 24 points as he out-played his counter- part, Eric Turner, in the second battle between the two highly-touted first- year guards. "Sam played an outstanding game," said Spartan head coach Jud Heath- cote. "We're trying to have Sam more involved in the offense, giving him a share of the play-making role with Kevin (Smith)." However, Smith was not totally void in the Spartan offense, as he scored nine points and dished out five assists to help in the winning effort. THE SPARTANS, as has become Foul play typical of late, grabbed ansearly 23-10 lead. Unfortunately for Heathcote and his Spartans, it has also become fashionable of late to squander these early leads, as he watched the young Wolverines battle back to a five-point deficit at intermission. "The game was strange," explained Heathcote. "We got off to another commanding lead, but again, we made some key mistakes and found our lead cut." The Wolverines kept it close throughout much of the second half, but were unable to convert on three key op- portunities that would have given them the lead, which they never were able to acquire throughout the entire game. THAD GARNER once again paced the Wolverines with 15 points as Turner was the only other player to tally double figures with 12. Michigan, which had won three of its last four Big Ten contests, fell prey to some of its earlier weaknesses as it shot an impotent 41 percent from the field and was outrebounded, 33-24. The loss dropped the Wolverines' record to 4-15 overall and 3-8 in the Big Ten while Michigan State's record was upped to 10-11 and 5-6. It also marked 66-55 the fourth straight loss for the, Wolverines here at Jenison and the six- th loss to the Spartans in their last seven attempts. "It's a good lift, we needed something like this," said Heathcote, whose Spar- tans broke a two-game losing streak.- Anytime you beat Michigan its a special win." Big Ten Standings I Iowa...........
