Take a glance at the CCHA standings
and right at the very bottom rests
Miami (Ohio). Call 'em the cellar-
dwellers, doormats or whatever else
the league's last place team deserves,
but don't think the Michigan hockey
team will take the Redskins lightly
when they ramble into Yost Ice Arena
for a weekend series with the third-
place Wolverines.
"I know what kind of team they are,"
said Michigan hockey coach John Gior-
dano in reference to the Redskins. "We
had a heck of a time beating them down
there (in Oxford, Ohio). They're a fine
team and we are going to have our han-
ds full.I
"ANYONE WHO thinks this is going
to be easy is kidding themselves."
How can beating a last place team
be hard? Ask Michigan Tech or second-
place Michigan State, both of whom
split series with the Redskins lose
month.
Or remember December when the
Wolverines barely swept the Redskins
by scores of 3-2 and 4-3. "When we had
Michigan downhere in our own rink
both games were close," said Miami
assistant coach Bill Davidge. "In the

second game when we were leading 2-0
going into the third period, we had a
complete defensive lapse and lost a
game we should have won."a
AND DEFENSE will be the key again
in this series as the Redskins will at-
tempt to revive themselves from a pair
of losses to Ohio State last weekend. "It
was probably one of our poorest per-
formances all year," said Davidge.
"There wassno intensity indthe first
game and to sum it up our defensive
play was poor, our goal tending was bad
and our forwards were one step behind
the play all night. Our defensive
coverage must improve to beat
Michigan."
Miami (14-15-1; 7-14-1- CCHA) is led in
the offensive department by its number
one line which consists of Steve Morris
(18-27-45) at center, Rick Kuraly (18-
19-37) at left wing and Daid Wheeldon
(14-26-40) on right wing.
MICHIGAN HEADS into the series
after an impressive sweep over
Michigan Tech last weekend. that
boosted its record to 11-8-4 in the league
and 15-9-5 overall. "I think we played
really well against Tech," said Gior-
dano. "The team really came together
and played the systems well, the way
we wanted them to.
"I think the guys realize last week
was a crucial point' in the season and
there woI#'t be a letdown. What's going
to hurt us is injuries. We really got
banged up last weekend."
Included among the wounded is for-
ward Paul Kobylarz, who suffered a
knee injury against the Huskies in the
Saturday night game after scoring two
goals in the opener. Kobylarz will sit
out the Miami matchup but Giordano
hopes he will be able to return to the
lineup Tuesday when the Wolverines
travel to East Lansing to take on
Michigan State.
"We're excited about coming to
Michigan. This is the first time a team


trom Miami has played at Michigan
and the team is really up for it
Davidge. "We haveboth feet in the
bucket as far as the playoffs go and
hopefully this weekend we can get one
foot out."
