MiICHIGAN1 Thad lone, senior By BOB WOJNOWSKI As if to celebrate the start of another year of basketball, Michigan head coach Bill Frieder has swept out the old and ushered in the new-putting together in the process the youngest team in the Big Ten this season. Indeed, possibly never before in the history of Michigan basketball has a Wolverine team been so drastically altered personnel-wise in the space of just one year. _I GONE ARE Mike McGee, Johnny Johnson, Paul Heuerman and Marty Bodnar, who' collectively comprised 80 percent of Michigan's starting line-up last year. Gone are the top two reser- ves, Mark Bodnar, who also graduated last year, and sophomore Tim McCor- mick, who more than likely will sit out the entire campaign with a knee injury. Departing with-these players is 81 per- cent of Michigan's scoring output and 60 percent of its rebounding total from a year ago. 'Donning the Maize and Blue garb this winter will be four freshmen, five soh- pomores, three juniors and a lone senior, making Michigan the Big Ten's youngest, and not coincidentally, most inexperienced team. So coach Frieder, how do you feel about starting ,a new season with such a youth-laden squad? "Well you'd rather have a veteran team, but it's a challenge and that's what it's all about," he says. "I'm not going to panic because I know we've got some good young players." FRIEDER MAY be calling it something other than a challenge before all is said and done. Last year, Michigan managed just eight Big Ten wins in 18 outings, and four of those triumphs were overtime victories directly attributable to the Wolverines' wealth of experience. This season, there will be no such experience to turn to in the closing moments, save forward Thad Garner, the team's captain for the second year in a row. But this is a potential problem Frieder hopes will rectify itself as time wears on. "We've got some kids with leadership capabilities," he says. "And when they starters outside of Garner managed cumulative totals of just 2 9 ppg and 2.4 rebounds per game last season while playing sparingly. SO WHAT does all this youth and inexperience do to - a coaching philosophy which just last season relied on experience and court savvy to win ball games? "We're going to have to change our defenses a lot, run when we can, and try to catch teams off guard," says Frieder. "We do have quickness, and if we can rebound and fast break then we can utilize that quickness" can utilize that quickness." The average years of experience column is the average of all players listed on the roster of each team, with 0 years given for each freshman, one year for each sophomore, two years for each junior and three years for each senior. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. ?. Michigan will likely open the Big Ten season with.a starting line-up of 6-7 junior Ike Person at center, 6-7 senior Garner and 6-7 sophomore Dean Hop- son at the forward spots and 6-3 fresh- man Eric Turner and 6-5 junior Joe James at guard. While there is onlyone freshman in that starting five, that number is deceiving, as the other three Indeed, that quickness may be the only advantage the Wolverines are liable to have over any given opponent. But Frieder feels that there may be just one more edge, an edge inherent in a youthful team. "People have labeled our biggest weaknesses as inexperience and youth, but we like to think those very qualities will turn into our biggest strengths," says Frieder. "Each of our players realizes ther contribute ar think you'll s ball team this 7' / R EST AUR ANT 120 E. Liberty 761-1470 Sunday Special: B.B.Q.
