At 6-11, Tim McCormick looked to give the Wolverines something at center which they lacked with Phil Hubbard and Paul Heuerman in recent years-height. But surgery on both of McCormick's knees has dashed such plans. Once again, Michigan will delegate the -responsibilities of a center to a player who looks like a forward. Such is the role that 6-7 Junior Ike Person will play this year. "THE REASON I play center is because I rebound well," said Person. "But when I go up against seven-footers I might have problems. And when they get the ball down low, it's gonna be two points since I can't block their shots or intimidate them. A guy like (7-4 Virginia center) Ralph Sampson would have a field day against me." Sampson isn't the only big- man who could cause Person trouble. "It's brutal some of the guys he'll have to go against," said Wolverine head coach Bill Frieder. "He's got to guard a guy like (6-10 Purdue forward/center) Russell Cross or (7-3 Minnesota center) Randy Breuer, and that's a problem.': If Person is to do well against such players, he must keep his taller op- ponents outside. An inability to do so may keep scorekeepers very busy, and make the Breuer's and Cross's of the Big Ten very happy. "I HAVE to keep them from getting the ball down low, because if he's (taller opposing centers) a good shooter within five feet, all I can do is put up my hands, block out and hope he misses." Hardly an optimistic outlook. Person's role in the past gives little reason to squelch such pessimism. "When I've come in, in the past, I've replaced someone and played for five minutes and held my own," he said. "But when I have to play in the middle for a whole game; I might have some problems. "When I get tired, I have a tendency to foul more. When you get tired and a guy's beating you, you just reach to grab him. It's either two points or a foul; so I'll take the foul." IN ORDER TO compensate for the height disadvantage, Person says that he'll have to play a physical brand of basketball. This style could also keep the referees' whistles blowing. "I might get into a little foul trouble this year since I'll have to be so aggressive," said the Barrington, Illinois native. "I'll be keeping this in mind. I hope the officials will just let me play in there. That's what it will take." So Person is going tobe eaten alive by the big bad centers that he will face in conference play, right? Maybe not. Nobody has compared Person to Wes Unsold or Dave Cowens-highly suc- cessful centers despite a lack of height-but the 208-pounder is not without his strong points. "IKE PERSON is capable of being a good scorer and a good rebounder," said Frieder. "He's a good kid and a hard worker." But if Person is to get the better of opposing post-men it will probably not be by outjumping them or by outscoring them from the inside. If the junior does overshadow his counterparts, it will be primarily through the use of speed. "With our fast break, I'll be at an ad- vantage since an opposing center will be hard pressed to stay with me." But there is more than one way for a small man to beat a big man. "When I'm in the game, I have the option to go outside where I can shoot or drive," he said. "If I'm faster than him, I'll drive around him. And if he backs off, I'll take the shot. That's what Paul Heuer- man did and he did it well." Quickness and an outside shot, these are the traits that could allow Person to hold his own at center. If these charac- teristics aren't enough, opposing teams look to have the advantage at the pivot. A BIG advantage. Person (6-7) will fac( the Big Ten season as he goes against all taller pla: position. Height will be the key factor for the entire Wol come in order toensure a successful year.
