SPORTS The Michigan Daily Friday, February 5, 1982 Page 8 q Cagers claw 'Cats, By RON POLLACK The Michigan basketball team has not yet reached the stage where it can claim to be making a habitout of win- ning, but last night's 66-63 victory over Northwestern marked the Wolverines' second win in three games and second consecutive win at home. Michigan (3-14) received balanced scoring from Thad Garner, Eric Tur- ner, Ike Person and Dean Hopson as all four finished the game with double figures. Garner was high man for the lWolverines with 15 points and North- western senior forward Jim Stack was the game's leading scorer with 19. PARTICULARLY pleasing to Michigan head coach Bill Frieder was his squad's rebounding. "We dida good job out boxing out," he said. "For the first time this year we didn't give up a lot of~ second shots." Michigan led 33-27 early in the second half when a rather unusual play oc- cured. On a Michigan fast break, Tur- ner attempted to dunk the ball, but in- stead of putting the Wolverines' up by eight, he was assessed a technical foul when the basket collapsed and he was called for hanging onto the rim. "I REALLY didn't see what hap- pened," said Turner. "Before the game, we tried to pull the rim down sin- ce it was new. But it didn't come down and we decided that it wouldn't. Maybe it was adrenalin." Whatever the reason, the play sparked Northwestern. Stack connec- ted on the technical foul shot, and a Gaddis Rathel free throw narowed the basement Wolverines' lead to 33-28. Stack then hit an eight-foot jump shot, followed by a Michael Jenkins, layup, and suddenly Michigan was only up 33-32. But just as a technical foul against Michigan spurred on Northwestern, a technical against the Wildcats got the Wolverines going. Northwestern's Bob, Grady was given a technical for hanging on the rim, while Person was fouling Gaddis Rathel. Rathel hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 33- 33, but Michigan then outscored the Wildcats 9-2 to go up 42-35. During this offensive outburst, the Wolverines had three layups. THE NEXT seven minutes of play, saw the Wolverines keep their lead 66-63 because of their fast break led by Tur- ner. "When he can wheel and deal, he's a much better player," said Frieder of Turner. "He's a great full court player. He's just learning the half court game now. He didn't have to do that in high school." MICHIGAN took its biggest lead of the game with 4:11 remaining in the contest when Garner drove toward the basket and scored on a reverse dunk. The Wildcats narrowed the Wolverines' lead to 61-54 when Turner fouled out of the game with 1:32 left. "When he fouled out, it was my job as a senior to take over," said Garner. "I'm sure Northwestern thought they had a good chance when Eric fouled out. But we rose to the occasion." Northwestern made the game closer after Turner fouled out, but the three point deficit at game's end was as close as it could get down the stretch. The loss drops the Wildcats' record to 6-12, 2-7 in conference play to tie Michigan for eighth place. Turner-ing it around I Stack..... .... Goode ......... Grady ......... Rathel ........ Jenkins. That was the home opener at Tech's Student Ice Arena way back in October, and a lot has happened to both teams since that time. But since mid-December the Huskies have gone 9-4 and moved to third place. Meanwhile, the Wolverines during that period have played 3-6-3 hockey and curently occupy fifth place in the CCHA. During that stretch, Michigan has scored 2.8 goals per league game while Tech has notched 5.4 goals per outing. The most recent statistics show that the Michigan icers lost two games in a home-and-home series with Bowling Green last weekend, while the Huskies split with Notre Dame in their Winter Carnival games. s Michigan coach John Giordano was pleased with the Wolverines' showing against the Falcons, especially in Saturday's 5-4 loss in Bowling Green. Maclnnes, however, was not par- ticularly pleased with the Huskies' ef- forts against the Irish. The puck was bouncing Tech's way on Friday, and the Huskies won, thanks to a stellar 45- save performance by goalie Tom Allen. Allen, a freshman from Ann Arbor, garnered MVP honors for the weekend. "They're going to come in fired up, said Giordano. "But my main concern is with our team. We've got to get back on the track-stop this skid and get back on the way up." Giordano's efforts this week have been aimed at generating more offense. "Our defense has been okay," he said., "We've got to develop more offense. We're changing our forechecking for the third time this season in hopes of getting more offense." Freshman Jon Elliott will start in the Wolverine goal for tonight's game. All of the Wolverines are healthy. In the scoring catagory, Tech has five players with 28 or more points. Leading the list is right winger Steve Murphy with 31 points, including 14 goals. Michigan's top scorer, Steve Richmond has scored 28 points. Allen has been the Huskies' regular net minder, posting a 12-3-0 mark and 3.56 goals - against average. Elliott owns a 5-5-4 slate with a 3.09 gaa. Gior- dano has been rotating goalie duties between Elliott and senior Peter Mason (7-4-1, 2.86 gaa). Both teams traditionally receive good fan support, as Michigan-Michigan Tech games usually sell out and large numbers of Huskies supporters turn out from the Detroit area. Michigan (13-9-5 overall, 9-8-4 CCHA) and Michigan Tech (17-9-2 overall, 13-8 1 CCHA) will play tonight and tomorrow night at Yost Ice Arena with both games starting at 7:30 p.m. Radio station WJJX (65 AM) will broadcast both games live. Marchibroda, 50, who will be the Lions' offensive coordinator and quarterback coach, assumes the duties of Bob Schnelker, who was reassigned by Coach Monte Clark. SCHNELKER WAS one of the first men Clark hired when he took over the Lions four years ago, but the two argued frequently over strategy last season. Clark wanted a more wide-open attack. In announcing the appointment, Clark called Marchibroda one of the outstanding passing-attack masters in the National Football League. "He has shaped the careers of some outstanding players, including Bert Jones, Roman Gabriel, Sonny Jurgenson, Billy Kilmer and Larry Brown," Clark noted. (OPEN FOR FUN' Great Escape
