An athlete goes through a great rookie year, the expec- tations are high, and then all of a sud- den his second season is a flop. Could this be the year of the sophomore jinx for Bill Frieder? LAST YEAR was Frieder's rookie season as head coach of the Michigan basketball team, and he won more games than any Michigan coach had ever won before. His cagers fielded an impressive 9-0 preconference season mark, and went on to finish the 1980-81 campaign with a formidable 19-11 record after losing in the third round of the National Invitation Tournament to Syracuse.- Michigan has lost five seniors-four of them starters-from that team, Coach Bill Frieder huddles with his team to discuss strategy during the Eastern Michigan contest. The second- year coach, who eclipsed the Michigan rookie win mark with 19 last season, is faced with a tough task of coaching an inexperienced team in the Big Ten this year. Doily e'hoto by BRIANMACK however, as well as the services of 6-11 sophomore center Tim McCormick (knee surgery). The Wolverines have already lost two games against two op- ponents (Arkansas and Eastern Michigan) which they beat last year. Yes, the sophomore jinx is definitely looming on Bill Frieder's horizon. The thing about Frieder, though, is that he'll be the first one to tell you about it when things look bad. "WE'LL HAVE TO play very well to survive," says the 38-year-old mentor. "It's stupid to say we could win the Big Ten." It's not that Frieder is a total pessimist, just a realist. "To be honest, it'll be a tough season," said the coach. "We're simple outtalen- ted this year. But we're not going to throw in the towel." IN FACT, IF you're lucky you can sometimes catch Frieder go out on a limb and actually express some hope. "My feelings are that we're not going to panic. We'll have some good young players in a year or two," Frieder maintained. "We're on the verge of a good recruiting year. We've got a good shot at all the top players in the state. And we've already got the nucleus of a good future team." All Frieder is saying, is give the man (himself) a chance. After all, this is only his second year as head coach, and he is truly responsible for the perfor- mances of the freshmen and sophomores on the team who he has headed from Day One. BUT NO MATTER what the situation, Frieder is not one to pass the buck. "I felt whatever happened to us last year, it was my team," said the coach. "And whatever happens to us this year, it's my team. You can blame Bill Frieder for whatever happens to us." In keeping with his typically self- effacing manner, Frieder explains that he is partly responsible for the whole team's level of talent. As assistant coach under Johnny Orr for seven years at Michigan, Frieder did his share of trying to snare the nation's most talented high school ballplayers. including everyone on this year's team. "I've been involved with recruiting all the kids," said Frieder. "But in the junior and senior classes there's not a lot of leadership. We didn't recruit well enough in those classes." GIVE FRIEDER a chance anyway. He wouldn't ask for anything more. "There's no excuse not to win at Michigan," he said. "If we don't bounce back I'm not doing my job." Frieder enjoys his present job too much and is too used to winning not to bounce back. "This is a great school to coach . . . If I couldn't have become the head coach at Michigan, well . . . I might have just left the business," said the loyal Michigander, who has an .800 winning percentage in his entire head coaching career, including 22-2 and 25-0 Class 'A' Championship seasons at the helm of Flint Northern high school, a performance which earned him a spot next to Orr on the Michigan bench. So give the man a shot-he's only a sophomore.
