Michigan Hockey Statistics Individual By KEN SHORE For most people Christmas comes once a year, leaving behind fond memories and three or four valuable presents. For coach Gloria Soluk, Christmas began with the first practice of the season and has yet to end. While the majority of Michigan students were home enjoying the holidays, the women's basketball team remained in Ann Arbor, compiling a five game win streak which included a sweep of its own holiday tournament and a defeat of cross-state rival Michigan State. IT ALL BEGAN way back on the thir- teenth of December with a game again- st the Blue Demons of DePaul. Senior co-captain Diane Dietz and sophomore Lori Gnatkowski led the attack with 28 points and 10 assists respectively, as the Wolverines notched their first vic- tory of the streak, 88-72. "We played real tough," said fresh- man Peg Harte. "Our defense stayed with us the whole game." The next opponent Michigan disposed of was the Chippewas from Central Michigan. It was the second meeting between the two teams this season, with. Michigan winning the first one 85-77. Due to the fact that it was the second time the Wolverines had faced them, the team as a whole showed a lack of in- tensity. Despite their inconsistent play, Michigan won the game 83-68. "WE PLAYED down to their level," pointed out Harte. "We didn't totally blow them out." After a brief Christmas break, the team was back on the court, competing in the first ever Domino's Pizza Wolverine Classic. The two-day affair, played at Crisler Arena, featured Bowling Green, Kent State, Wayne State, and the host team, Michigan. Picking up where they left off, the team held off a strong Bowling Green team in .the first round, defeating them 74-70. In the championship game, the Wolverines overcame a much taller Kent State squad, 79-63. The most recent victory in the streak occurred this past Tuesday, as the Wolverines knocked down arch rival Michigan State, 78-76. Starting center PAtrice Donovan dominated the game with 10 rebounds and nine blocked shots. Michigan hopes to continue their streak this coming Saturday, as they travel to Ohio to face the Buckeyes from Ohio State. Grapplers 19 of 68 In the middle of Christmas vacation the Michigan wrestling team finished 19th out of 68 teams in the 1981 Midlands Wrestling Championship in Evanston, Illinois. The majority of Michigan's points were tallied by 158-lb. senior Nemir Nadhir, who won three of four matches; sophomore All-American Joe Mc- Farland, who took fourth place in the 118-16 class; senior Eric Klasson, who managed a fifth place finish in the heavyweight division. Both Mac- Farland and Klasson had been previously undefeated before suffering late-round losses in the Midlands tour- ney. The top three teams in the tour- nament were Iowa State, the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, and Iowa, which in- dicates the abundance of wrestling talent in the state of Iowa. The wrestling team's next home mat- ch will also be their first Big Ten mat- ch, against Indiana on January 15 at Crisler Arena, beginning at 7:30 p.m. DOUGLAS B. LEVY Shell Shocker-ed? NEW YORK (AP)- The athletic program at Wichita State has been placed on probation by the NCAA for a long list of recruiting violations, the New York Post said yesterday. The newspaper, quoting sources close to the NCAA, said the probation could be for as long as three years. That could bar the Shockers' nationally ranked basketball team from television ap- pearances and postseason tournamen- ts. No. Name, Pos. 16 T. Speers, C-RW...... 14 B. Tippett, LW........ 7 S.
