'a.. e ' r t.w Jnym4 By MARK BOROWSKI The Michigan State hockey team knocked Bowling Green from the top spot in the CCHA over the weekend, but unfortunately for coach Ron Mason's Spartans,-being number one only lasted for a day. A 7-3 MSU victory Friday night over Ohio State, coupled with Bowling Green's 9-8 overtime loss to Notre Dame, moved the Spartan squad just percentage points ahead of the Falcons in the race for the league lead. Michigan State slid back into second, however, after losing, 4-1, to Ohio State Saturday night, while Bowling Green dumped the Fighting Irish, 8-7, in an ex- tra period. MASON ATTRIBUTED his squad's win to a strong performance by its "special teams," the power play, and penalty-killing units. "We capitalized on our opportunities Friday night," he said. "Our special teams played very well. "When you score five times when your special teams are out there - two shorthanded and three power play goals - it is likely you are going to win." Spartan captain Newell Brown led the offensive attack, as he racked up two shorthanded goals and one power play score to net a hat trick in the opener. THE SECOND game in Columbus proved to be a different story, however. "Ohio State played a better game, and we didn't capitalize on our oppor- tunities," said Mason. "If it weren't for (Michigan State goalie) Ron Scott, they would have blown it open in the second period. We came out and dominated the third period but couldn't score. Ohio State MSU, Bowling Green flip- flop at top spot has a smaller rink and used it to its ad- vantage Saturday night," said Mason. Bowling Green 8-8, Notre Dame 9-7 The first-place Falcons ended up with a split against Notre Dame over the weekend. Both games were sent into, overtime, as they featured little defen- se and lots of scoring - 32 goals, to be exact, were compiled in the series.. Bowling Green forward Peter Wilson earned CCHA Player-of-the-Week notching five third-period goals in the first night and four the second. Laker coach Bill Selman attributed his team's performance to his icers' continuing improvement. "Our wins have just been an accumulation of all the things I have been teaching the team," he said. "We haven't lost in the last nine games, and we are a little ahead of where we thought we would be at this time in the season. Ferris State 4-5, Michigan Tech 2-7 Michigan Tech maintained its hold on third place by splitting with Ferris State over the weekend. The Bulldogs took the first game, 4-2, and the Huskies retaliated, 7-5, on Saturday night. Bill Terry had five points to lead Michigan Tech in the offensive depar- tment, while Randy Merrifhield had a strong game for Ferris, with the win- ning score Friday night and a penalty- killing performance that helped hold Tech scoreless in all but one of 14 power play situations. Miami (0)8-5, Western Mic gan 3-4 Miami of Ohio inally did it, "it" being a weekend sweep of a CCHA op- ponent. The victim was Western Michigan, which has succumbed to the Redskins in three of their four meetings this year. honors as he scored ninepoints inmthe match-up. He had two goals and four assists in the loss and two goals, in- cluding the overtime winner, on the second night. Falcon. senior George McPhee set a new Bowling Green scoring record of 240 points by collecting a goal and eight assists over the weekend. For years, American managers have assumed that Japanese management techniques are not applicable to American corporations. And during that time, they've watched Japanese productivity rise to supremacy while American productivity declines rapidly William Ouchi, the man who coined the term "Theory Z"thinks differently. In his revolutionary book-the definitive bestseller that's been acclaimed by every major business journal - he outlines exactly why what, and how we can learn from Japanese business philosophy. Many Fortune 500 companies in the U.S. have already adapted the Theory Z style of management with tre- mendous success. Executives of all corporations- large and small -should read Theory Z if American business is to prosper in the 1980's.
