4 Page 10-Friday, January 22, 1982-The Michigan Daily Spartans hold off Blue rally, 64-62 'l Cagers fail to 1 12 By RON POLLACK After a doss earlier in the season, Michigan basketball coach Bill Frieder said that he and his team would "rip down the nets" when it finally won its second game of the year. A 28-22 Michigan lead at halftime against Michigan State at Crisler Arena last night made such a post-game celebration loom as a distinct possibility. But in the end, the nets remained in place, as the Spartans prevailed, 64-62. The Wolverines' downfall was a 27-9 Michigan - State outburst over 12 minutes and 44 seconds of play in the second half to give the Spartans a 53-38 lead with 6:09 remaining in the game. "IN THE SECOND half we lost momentum and enthusiasm," said Michigan center Ike, Person, who finished the game with a career-high 20 points. "They went to the boards and they were aggressive. We were outsized and outmanned." But the Wolverines fought back valiantly behind the play of team cap- Lain Thad Garner. Garner's outside shooting was the key to a Michigan comeback that saw a 13-point Michigan State lead dwindle away. Over the last 3:53 of the game, Garner scored 11 of his 23 points. Many of these points came after starting guards Eric Turner and Dan Pelekoudas had fouled out. "When Erie and Pelekoudas fouled, I saw that when we replaced them we had no one to set it up," said Garner. "So I had to take it upon myself." THE WOLVERINES' comeback was aided by the free throw shooting of Spartan guard Kevin Smith. Smith, an 86 percent free throw shooter entering the contest, could only convert on three of eight in the game and one of five in the last three minutes.. "It kind of surprised me," said Gar- ner of Smith's inability to hit his free throws. "It happens to everyone now and then. Our fans were waving their hands. His misses let us 'back in the game." Although the loss was a disappointing one for Michigan, Person's play gave cause for optimism. "HE PLAYED extremely well," said Frieder of Person, who scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half. "He was good around the basket. We were deliberate and pulled them out. That opened up Ike." "I just got myself all pumped up and went all out," said Person. "In the first half I was moving a lot, and Eric and Thad were looking to me inside and it worked out." But in the second half, Michigan State did a good job of shutting down Person, limiting him to only four free throws. . "THEY WERE boxing out (in the second half),"said Person. "Ben Tower individually boxed me out. And before I could get to the boards, three or four guys would hit me." Spartan head coach Jud Heathcote explained how his squad took control of the boards in the second half, and in the process outrebounded Michigan, 21-12, in that stanza. "We sagged the zone in, and gave them the outside shot," he said. Just as Michigan State held a big second half lead only to see it disap- pear, the Wolverines were well ahead on the scoreboard in the first 'half. Michigan outscored MSU 12-2 at one point in the first half, with Person leading the way to give Michigan a 24-14 lead. The 6-7 junior scored six of these points on a layup, a 22-foot jumper and a tip-in. DESPITE THE loss, the Michigan squad was praised by both Heathcote and Frieder. "Give Michigan credit. They came back and we just feel fortunate that time ran out," said Heathcote, noting that his team's victory was not assured until the final buzzer had sounded. "Our kids fought back and I give them credit for that," said Frieder. "They've done that all year." Michigan State was led in scoring by Smith, who notched 23 points. Derek Perry added 19. Michigan's next game will be on the road tomorrow at Iowa. 0 Woe ful-rines 4 I erience Video Gmes like I You Never Heard Them Before, YOU CAN NOW PLAY YOUR FAVORITE GAMES I WHILE LISTENING THROUGH OUR NEW I i STEREO HEADPHONES i I AVAILABLE AT ALL FOUR LOCATIONS: TOMMY'S-Packard and State FLIPPER McGEE'S-613 E. THE HAWKEYES boosted their Big Ten record to 4-1 and are 12-2 overall while Northwestern slipped to 2-3 in the conference and 6-8 on the season. A pair of free throws by Arnold cut the lead to two but Northwestern scored the next eight points, six of them by Stack, for a 25-15 edge. Four free throws by Payne cut it to 25-19 but a three-point play by Colin Murray gave the Wildcats a 28-24 half- time advantage. Stack scored the first two baskets of the second'half as Northwestern took a 32-24 lead before Iowa started chipping away.
