The Michigan State hockey coach finally won a game in Michigan's Yost Arena and his team did it in convincing style by defeating the Wolverines, 5-2, in front of a sparse Monday night hockey crowd. The win upped the second-place Spar- tans record to 13-5-1 in the CCHA as the fourth place Wolverines fell to 9-6-4. "THIS IS the first time I've won in this lousy rink," said Mason. "And it sure feels good." Mason attributed the win partly to the series Michigan had last Friday and Saturday night against Notre Dame. "Michigan's defense looked a little slow and I think that is because of the TUESDAY LUNCH-DISCUSSION January 19-12 NOON "MEDICAL EFFECTS OF NUCLEAR WAR AND THE PHYSICIANS RESPONSIBILITIES" Speaker: DR. DAVID BASSETT, M.D. Associate Professor of internal Medicine; U. of M. At the JNTERNATIONAL CENTER Notre Dame series. Notre name has a lot of fast forwards and the series last weekend probably had a lot to do with that. "WE PLAYED a good consistent game," Mason continued, ,"and this should give us a good confidence boost." Mason got two goals from freshman Lyle Phair and one each from Gord Flegel, Jeff Eisley and Kelly Miller, while Michigan's goals were scored by Steve Yoxheimer and Paul Kobylarz. "Lyle played very well for us tonight," said Mason. "He not only, scored for us, but he is very strong and physical up front. We looked for a left wing last year when we were recruiting and he has done the job." IT WAS also a battle between two of. the league's top goalies-Ron Scott for the Spartans and Jon Elliott for the Wolverines. Scott won that battle by stopping 19 shots and Elliott tuined back 36. As play opened in the first period, one would never have guessed the two teams had just completed a two-game series last Saturday. Michigan con- trolled the play early in the fast-paced first stanza, but it was the Spartans who got on the scoreboard first. Left wing Phair snapped a Mark Hamway pass from behind the net over the left shoulder of Elliott at 11:20. THE WOLVERINES retaliated at 3:30 of the second period to knot the score at 1-1. Freshman Dave McIntyre dropped a perfect pass to right wing Yoxheimer, who preceded to rifle a low slap shot from just inside the blue line to beat Michigan State netminder Ron Scott on the far side. The Spartans- jumped back into the lead, 2-1, on another goal by Phair. Elliott slid across the crease to make one save, then the Spartan left wing slid the rebound under the Michigan goalie for his hinth goal of the season. With only six seconds left in the period, State upped its margin to two on a power play goal by Flegel. Just seven seconds earlier Wolverine Ted Speers was sent to the penalty box for tripping and that allowed Flegel to collect his fifth goal of the season. THE SPARTANS put the game out of reach for good eafly in the third period with a goal by Miller, making the score 4-1. Michigan State's Dee Rizzo took a slap shot from the point that Elliott got a glove on, but the rebound fell right in front, and Miller easily backhanded the puck past the Wolverine goalie. With less than a minute left in the game, the two teams exchanged goals with Eisley picking up his third of the season for the Spartans and Kobylarz getting his eighth. Michigan returns to Yost Ice Arena this Friday and Saturday to face Illinois-Chicago Circle, in a .non- conference matchup, which will be the first-ever meeting of the two teams.
