Page 10-Saturday, December 6, 1980-The Michigan Daily Attention future Big f The Michigan Daily-Saturday, Dece Ten champs: start winning a few road games! Big Ten Conference results and schedule Conference Leaders SCORING Mchigan 197 Statistics By JON MORELAND With less then ten minutes left in last year's Michigan-Michigan State game at East Lansing, Mike McGee misfires on a 20-footer and the Spartans' Ron Charles grabs the rebound, initiating a fast break layup at the other end of the court by Terry Donnelly. The Wolverines still hold a 63-55 lead, but that advantage is negated because about 98 per cent of the 10,004 fans jammed into Jenison Field House are on their feet, screaming for the hometown Spartans. THE MOMENTUM has completely switched and Michigan watches its lead vanish in a matter of about three minutes. The Wolverines are never in the game again as they suffer an 82-74 defeat that eliminates them from any NCAA tournament consideration. The home-court advantage. It's been part of the American system since the original home-court upset. You remember that encounter a few years back. The undefeated and num- ber one-ranked Red Coats came in featuring a lineup spotted with names like Burgoyne and Cornwallis. They were heavy favorites to dispose of a squad comprised mostly of freshmen and sophomores. BUT PLAYER-COACH George Washington led an aroused band of Patriots in a strong second-half comeback as the underdogs sent the highly touted British away with their first loss of the season. That struggle of a few years back was 1979-80 Indiana Ohio State Purdue Iowa Minnesota Illinois MICHIGAN Wisconsin Michigan State- Northwestern RoadRecords On Road Overall W L W L 4 5 13 5 4 5 12 6 3 6 11 7 3 6 10 8 2 7 10 8 2 7 8 10 1 8 8 10 1 8, 7 11 1 8 6 12 1 8 5 13 claims Michigan coach Bill Frieder. Frieder knows his team must improve on last year's 1-8 road record in the con- ference if it is going to even think about contending for the title. - "LAST YEAR Indiana won all their home games, and went 4-5 on the road," he continued. "That was good enough to win the conference." Not much seems to have changed from a year ago when home teams won more than 75 per cent of their conferen- ce games. There's still the two-game Thursday-Saturday road trips; there's still the jam-packed arenas in every Big Ten city from Columbus to Min- neapolis; and there's still the easily- influenced trio of zebras that is trying- often unsuccessfully-to maintain some semblance of order on the 94-foot strip surrounded by those screaming throngs. "There's nothing tougher in college basketball than playing Indiana in Bloomington Thursday night and get- ting up to go to West Lafayette to play Purdue on Saturday," said Frieder. "It's extremely hard to keep the kids up mentally." THIS SEASON, Michigan has its share of those road-trip weeken- ds-three, to be precise. The team opens its Big Ten season with a trip to Purdue and Minnesota, makes a weekend visit to Northwestern and Wisconsin later in January, and sojour- ns to Indiana and Minnesota in one fell swoop during February. These six games could very well determine the Wolverines' fate in the Big Ten race. As for the extremely vocal crowds and their effect on the officials, well, it's anyone's guess as to how much dif- ference the zebras can make. ONE THING is for certain: they do have an effect on the game, and that ef- fect is usually not favorable as far as the visitors are concerned. Coaches are obviously reluctant to publicly reprimand the officials in any given game, but from reading between the lines of any mentor's comments, it is pretty safo to say there is not a coach in the league who doesn't feel the officials cost his team at least one game last season. It's all part of the game, and in the end, it all ,probably evens out. That's how the home court advantage has im- proved in the last few years. George Washington never had to take his troops and give the British a remat- ch on their home field. At least in the Big Ten, everyone plays everyone else home and away. - Jay Vincent, MSU..... Crisler Arena, named after former football coach and athletic director Herbert O. "Fritz" Crisler, was opened December 2, 1967 with Michigan losing to Kentucky by a score of 9649. Since that time, it has hosted such diverse performances as an Olga Korbut gymnastics exhibition, commencement speeches by Gerald Ford and Walter Mondale, and concerts by Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen-not to mention the excitement provided by Wolverine teams of the 1970's.
