Tonight, the University of North 0Dakota, 7-3 in the WCHA and 10-4 overall, will be stalking the ice of Yost Ice Arena expecting to physically dominate the Michigan Wolverines. PICTURE THIS: Michigan's Brian Lundberg, John Blum, and Gordie Hampson all sliding on the ice as four Fighting Sioux thrash goalie Paul Fricker-Not a chance, says Michigan interim head coach John Giordano. Giordano, acting as head coach for an indefinite period due to the resignation of first year coach Wilf Martin, is fully anticipating a bruisitig game but sees no other way to play North Dakota. "We have to play aggressive and just hope it comes out our way," said Gior- dano. "We can handle it." GIORDANO IS impressed with the defending national champion Sioux, who have taken the WCHA title twice in the two years since John (Gino) Gasparini took over as head coach. "They've got a strong defensive front, and they body check, but they are still scoring," said Giordano. "They are a physically tough team. But, maybe our edge is our discipline. North Dakota has suffered three heartbreaking conference losses this season. In the early phase of the schedule, Minnesota slipped past the Sioux 9-8 and 5-4 in overtime. Min- nesota-Duluth split a weekend series with North Dakota one month ago by beating NoDak 7-3 and losing 5-4. NORTH DAKOTA'S high scoring of- fense has produced outstanding statistics for its scoring leaders. Freshman center Troy Murray has scored 18 goals and assisted 18 times. Sophomore right winger Glen White totaled 13 goals and 14 assists while Phil Sykes has 10 goals and 14 assists. Murray has been the freshman sen- sation of the season. So surprising that he has finally won the respect of coach Giordano. "He's a pro prospect," said Giordano. "We really missed the boat with him." Giordano had scouted Murray last year and had not been impressed at all. "He must have had bad games on the nights I went to watch him," said Gior- dano, "because he didn't show me anything." It's up to Fricker whether or not Murray comes back to haunt Giordano. starting posi 4," said assistant coach Joe Wells, "Bob w bud he got fat this summer.
