while continuing on his commanding
drain on the enormous orchestral
resources.
COPLAND'S Quiet City, for Trumpet,
English Horn, and String Orchestra,
followed. Originally, incidental music
for a play of the same name by Irwin
Shaw, the piece evolved. into a
challenging, soloistic work depicting
the brooding loneliness of a city at night
involving typical Copland tonalities
The work opened with the strings and
English horn, played by Robert Cowart
in a very sensitive and expressive style.
The first half of the concert ended
with the most impressive work presen-
ted, Verdi's Overture to 'La Forza del
destino'. The six opening brass out-
cries, forcefully dictated by Maestro
Giulini, prefigure the ensuing
dramatics. During this overture, the
orchestra lost all its inhibitions, raged
and wept, all the while singing a
passionate stream of melodramatic
phrases. The constant emotion
develops into a majestic brass choir
section, which is continually interrup-
ted by the feverish strings. These build
to a breathtaking climax that signals
the return of the lush original theme.
This is followed by a calmer string sec-
tion punctuated by brass ex-
clamations-the antithesis of the for-
mer section, which builds to the final
clidiax, anticipated by some flawless
string runs and brass arpeggiations.
The entire second half of the concert
consisted of Brahm's Symphony No. 2 in
D major, Op. 73. Though mainly a
pastoral work, it contains its own dark
clouded here and there. The opening
allegro non troppo begins with a per-
feet blend of melancholy horn and
woodwind themes. The mellow,
resonant low string section, with their
romantic, rhapsodic phrases, made for
a highly individual rendition. The
adagio non troppo is very complex
and rich in texture. This movement also
has its tinges of drama, and moments of
anger which culminate in calmer solo
woodwind sections. The third
movement, marked allegretto
grazioso, quasi andantino, is full of
suppressed gaiety and hidden triumph. The
main oboe theme gives way to several tran-
sformations which display the Los Angeles
Philharmonic's superior woodwind section.
The final allegro con spirito is a mix-
ture of many moods-from inscrutable
solemnity, to the sudden drama of the
brass making stabs in the night, to
a thrilling ending-all dictated master-
fully by a man who has been described
as dealing "habitually in revelations."
Giulini says of himself, "I have no am-
bitions-except the greatest one of all,
which is to make music."
