SPORTS The Michigan Daily 'Tuesday', November 25, 1980 Page7 AII-Ameritrunn Harriers seventh in NCAA meet By JOHN FITZPATRICK Paced by a number of solid individual efforts, the Michigan men's cross coun- try team finished seventh in Monday's NCAA meet at Wichita, Kansas, with a total of 243 points. It was Michigan's best finish ever in this meet. The -winning team, the University of Texas at El Paso, (UTEP), was led by Tanzanian Suleiman Nyambui, a 29- year-old junior, who won a race dominated by foreign runners. UTEP was a class above the other schools in this meet, as the Miners garnered 79 points, far ahead of the 152 of second place Arkansas. Michigan's Dan Heikkinen ran what Coach Ron Warhurst described as a "super race" to finish as the second American, in ninth place overall, thus achieving All-American status for the second consecutive year in this meet. Teammate Brian Diemer also became an All-American by virtue of his placing among the top 25 American finishers, in thirty-eighth overall. Rounding out the top runners for the Wolverines were Dave Lewis in 57th, Gary Parenteau in 81st, and Bill Weidenbach in 110th. "We ran really well," said Warhurst. "Last year we finished thirteenth and that had been our best performance ever in the nationals. To better that this year is quite an achievement." Taking advantage of a flat, fast cour- se, which Warhurst described as ''several monotonous loops with a few good hills thrown in", and a cool, sunny day ideal for distance running, the lead pack took off from the starting line at a furious pace. The leaders passed the mile mark in an eye-popping 4:16, with Heikkinen (4:22) and Diemer (4:26) right behind. Very few changes in position took place in the latter stages of the race, as the runners raced again- st the clock more than each other. Nyambui, a silver medalist in the 5,000 meters at last summer's Olym- pics, and a seasoned international competitor who has run the second fastest 5,000 in history (13:12.3), had lit- tle trouble handling the pressures of a championship meet like this. Rounding out the top ten teams were Penn State in third (154 points), East Tennessee in fourth (189), UCLA in fifth (207) Western Kentucky in sixth (233), Michigan, Clemson in eight (287), Iowa State in ninth (303), and Michigan's arch-rival, Indiana, in tenth (305). r the ann arbor film cooperative TONIGHT presents TONIGHT Dan Heikkinen Brian Diemer l ndividuals spark M' grapprs DARK STAR 7:00 & 10:20 Aud. A Two of the all-time best episodes-CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER and THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES. By CHUCK JAFFE The Michigan wrestling team, behind five sparkling in- dividual efforts, placed second behind Ohio State in the Ohio Open, held in Dayton last weekend. The grapplers were led by Eric Klasson, Rob Rechsteiner, and Joe McFarland, all of whom placed first in their individual weight classes. Freshman McFarland was superb for the Wolverines, defeating last year's junior college national champ on the way to the finals. In the finals, McFarland stunned Doug Smith of Western Michigan, in a 6 to 4 decision. Smith was a national preseason favorite in the 118-pound weight class, and is ranked among the top eight wrestlers in the nation. AT 142 POUNDS, Mark Pearson placed fourth for the Wolverines. Pearson, a junior, faced some of the stiffest competition in the tournament. The 177 pound competition was won by Rob Rechsteiner. Rechsteiner, who is known as "the Rock," defeated Ed Potokar of Ohio State in the finals, by a 3 to 2 margin. Pat McKay placed third in the 190-pound class for the Wolverines. McKay finished with the most pins of any Michigan wrestler, putting his opponents down for the count in four different matches. Co-captain Eric Klasson was the winner of the heavyweight division. Klasson defeated Jeff ,Golz of Ohio State in the finals. This marked a rematch of last year's Big Ten championship, in which Klasson defeated Golz. This match also had national significance, because Golz is ranked third in the nation, while Klasson is ranked fifth. The Wolverines will face Michigan State in a dual meet tomorrow in East Lansing starting at 7 p.m. In the meet, the Wolverines will probably be without the services of Bob Siar, who has been having problems making weight requirements. Taking his place at 134-pounds will be either senior Jim Mathias or freshman Bill Goodill.
