. . 0 Fraternity to run game bal tColtumbus John Nixon, Bill Collins, and their brothers at Delta Upsilon fraternity have combined two rather popular fads-Michigan-Ohio State games and running-into a unique event which they hope will raise enough money to let others watch more Wolverine-Buckeye clashes. Starting at dawn Friday morning, about 25 members of the fraternity's members will run the game ball from Michigan Stadium to Ohio Stadium in Columbus to raise money for the Michigan Heart Association. Nixon said he expects to arrive on the Ohio State campus by about 10 a.m. Saturday. Nixon explained that the members will alternate running two-mile inter- vals, while a bus loaded with food and drink keeps them warm along their 198- mile journey. Donations have been, and will continue to be, collected this week, he said, adding that anyone interested in making a donation should contact the fraternity. -ALAN FANGER The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, November 18, 1980-Page 11 Cannavino ndmed tops on 'D'9tn Midwest ANN ARBOR (UPI) - "It wasn't so much an idea as an answer to our prayers," said Defensive Coordinator Bill McCartney of the Michigan coaching staff. And thus was born the scheme of using six defensive backs to stop Pur- due's potent passing attack last Satur- day in Michigan's stunning 26-0 shut- out, a victory in which the Boiler- makers were held without a first down through the entire last two quarters. The unorthodox plan left senior Andy Cannavino in as the lone linebacker most of the time and he performed his duties so well he led Michigan in Tackles again and was named UPI's Midwest Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season. "The reason we were able to do it and other people couldn't do it is because we have enough guys with good speed who are able to cover," McCartney said in his office. "Purdue does not have an option at- tack," he said. "We matched up well with Purdue this year as far as that particular type of defense is concerned. "And our four kids up front did a great job of keeping the pressure on Mark Herrmann."
