By MARK BOROWSKI Only a year ago the Michigan hockey team was a high-powered of- fensive machine led by centers Murray Eaves, Dan Lerg and Bruno Baseotto. What a difference a year can make. THE WOLVERINES will have a whoe new look to present for its fans in 1980-81. And one of the biggest questions that has to be plaguing fir- st year coach Wilf Martin is whether or not his team can overcome all the disruptions and settle down to play hockey. The first disruption for the squad occurred at the end of the 1979-80 season when then head mentor Dan Farrell opted to leave his coaching position for a career with a Toronto investment firm. His resignation was quite a surprise to both players and fans as his team had just com- pleted a very successful iseason gfinishing foirth in the highly com- petitive WCHA. In his piace Michigan athletic director Don Canham named former Wolverine player Martin as the new head coach. THE LOSS OF Lerg to graduation is the next change the team must ad- just to. Last season Lerg accounted for 37 goals and 39 assists, second only to Eaves in team scoring. Eaves' departure to the pro ranks leaves another hole in an offense that last year averaged over five goals per game. He is now playing for the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League. , And just when it seemed as if the team could put all these interrup- tions behind it and settle down to play hockey, the hazing of five freshman hockey players caused widespread publicity across the state. Most of the editorials were derogatory and many stories were inaccurate in the account of the in- cident. THE HAZING RESULTED in the suspension of three senior members of the team from the hockey series against Bowling Green. But the big blow came October 20 when the team's leading scorer back from last year, sophomore Baseotto, quit the team because of the "unfair media coverage" of the hazing event and the fact he feels he has a better chance of playing pro hockey by playing on a junior team in Calgary, Alberta. So the job of repairing and holding together the team was given to Martin. But he has been sidelined with a severe stomach ailment for the first two weeks of the season and 2nd-year assistant: John Giordano has taken over while Martin is recovering. Despite all the problems and changes the hockey team has battled with Martin and Giordano have a solid foundation to work with. "THERE ARE NO superstars on this team," said Giordano, "just a lot of hard workers." The strength of the "har- dworkers" will be the veteran defensive core anchored by seniors Tim Manning and John Blum and juniors Steve Richmond and Brian Lundberg. Manning is this year's team cap- tain and with his assist against Western Michigan last weekend has become the Wolverines' all-time leading scoring defenseman. He overtook Rob Palmer who had 98 points in his four year career. BLUM HAS BEEN the solidest defensive player and last year finished with 50 points on the season, only one behind the single season scoring record for a defenseman set in 79-80 by Manning. The nets will be held down by sophomore Paul Fricker who last season was the team MVP and named the WCHA rookie-of-the-year as chosen by the players of the league. Challenging Fricker for the starting spot will be seniors Rudy Varvari and Bob Sutton and junior Peter Mason who returned to the team after taking a year off. According to Giordano fans are not likely to see very many high scoring victories this season due to the loss of the three top scorers from last year. A GIORDANO IS CONFIDENT though that this team will fare well because of the intense checking system he has incorporated into the team's play. He is counting on sophomores Ted Speers and Brad Tippett to pick up some of the scoring slack and sees a lot of improvement in several offen- sive players over last year. So how Michigan will fare in 80-81 depends mainly on how effective its "new look" is and if the team can put the puck in the net without the aid of last year's top three scorers. By MARTHA CRALL Michigan hockey head coach Wilf Martin hasn't had a very warm welcome to his first season as a college coach. First it was the hazing incident and all the surrounding negative publicity, then his leading scorer from last season, Bruno Baseotto, left the team for home and junior hockey. All that, added to a stomach ailment which he suffered with during pre-season practice, has left Martin in and out of the hospital sin- ce the season began. THE NEW COACH, a Canada native, is the third former captain to return to coach the Wolverines. He played under former head coach and current Ticket Manager Al Renfrew, earning varsity letters in the 1963-64 and 1964-65 seasons. During his playing years at Michigan, he was the captain in his junior season, winner of the most colorful rookie award in 63-64, and winner of the Fielding H. Yost Award after his junior season. Martin's eligibility ran out after his junior year, so he transferred to the University of Alberta, earning his B.S. in physical education in 1966. SIX YEARS in professional hockey followed his college career, including play with the Seattle Totems, Muskegon Mohawks, Cleveland Barons, Denver Spurs, Providence Reds, and the Salt Lake City Golden Eagles. After earning his masters at Michigan in 1968 and finishing his work in Boulder, Colorado in 1973, Martin spent the past eight years at the University of Colorado as'the manager of the ice arena in the student Recreation Center. With his medical problems, however, since early in the pre- hockey season, the head coach for all practical purposes has been assistant coach John Giordano: IN HIS SECOND season as Michigan's assistant, Giordano is the veteran of the 1980-81 coaching staff. Giordano joined the staff of Dan Farrell, former Michigan coach of seven years, last season. He worked to make the Wolverine power play potent (72 goals in 201 chances), something that he has to work on this year, having lost the three top scorers from a year ago. Giordano graduated from Wayne State University and coached high school hockey at Harper Woods Notre Dame, where he led his 1972 team to a state high school cham- pionship., THE OTHER NEWCOMER to the Michigan coaching staff is graduate assistant, Jeff Jackson. The former Michigan State Univer- sity junior varsity hockey ;goalie is working on his masters degree in physical education here. The double major (public relations and education) MSU graduate had coaching experience with the Michigan Americans in St. Clair Shores Jackson before joining Martin's staff.
