His is a name relegated to football trivia books, a relative unknown unless one is a Wolverine football aficionado. But Slade did make this mark in his brief tenure as Bo Schembechler's field general in 1971. Slade, now a dentist, was a highly recruited athlete. The Saginaw All-Stater had a brilliant high school career as a passing quarterback. But when he came to Michigan, he was quickly converted to Schembechler's running style offense. HE DIDN'T BREAK into the lineup (during his sophomore year) until the sixth game, when he got the call to face Duffy Daugherty's Michigan State Spartans. And Slade gave his coach reason to gloat after the game, as he led the undefeated Wolverines to victory number six (they went on to go undefeated during the regular season in 1971), 24-13. "That was my best game," recalled Slade. "One of my greatest moments at Michigan was knocking one of the greatest defensive backs in the nation-Brad Van Pelt-on his ass. I hit him one time and he didn't get up." SLADE'S ROLE as quarterback that year featured him primarily as a pulling guard. Michigan rarely passed thought we would run right over them. But when we arrived in California, our practice field was under water-I think it was purposely flooded. It rained 11 out of the next 14 days-so we practiced in gymnasiums. We sort of got fat and lazy, and Stanford went out and beat us, 13-12. It was still very exciting, though." TODAY, SLADE practices dentistry in South Lyon and Fenton. He also is a part-time student at the University (he's working on his M.S. degree) because he plans to teach in the Dental School. It adds up to a very demanding schedule for the full-time practitioner, but he manages. "My main responsibility is to my patients," he said. "I have to miss a class sometimes-the University un- derstands, however. I'm a dentist fir- st." But Slade hasn't lost touch with Michigan football. He provides color commentary for WUOM play-by-play man Tom Hemingway. He still has the utmost respect for the University. "I've been a fortunate son-of-a-gun. I wouldn't trade my career for any amount of money. Bo Schembechler is the best thing going here, and even though I played only one year in the limelight, I've enjoyed it all. You'll hear no bad rap on Michigan from me." That, according to Slade, is the bot- tom line. So Slade often was a key blocker in this fine running attack. "We had more great players on that team than any in Michigan history, I think," said Slade. "There was Tom- Darden, Glenn Doughty, Reggie McKenzie, Paul Seymour, Billy Taylor, Dave Gallagher-the list is endless. "I WAS JUST fortunate to be along for the ride. I happened to be in the right place at the right time. I didn't play my junior or senior years-I was fifth string-but I never quit. It was just fun to be a part of the whole thing." Slade is also proud of his par- ticipation in the Rose Bowl, and has some peculiar memories of that game.
